A Mesa do Sr. Henrique

A Leonor abre o Café Pérola às oito menos dez, todas as manhãs. A Avenida Almirante Reis ainda está silenciosa àquela hora. Liga as luzes, limpa o balcão e põe o primeiro galão do dia na máquina. Não o faz para ninguém em particular. Fá-lo para o Sr. Henrique, que chega às nove. Chega sempre às nove. Ela espera por ele às nove da manhã há onze anos.

Leonor opens the Café Pérola at ten to eight every morning. Avenida Almirante Reis is still quiet at that hour. She turns on the lights, wipes the counter, and sets the first galão of the day on the machine. She doesn't make it for anyone in particular. She makes it for Sr. Henrique, who arrives at nine. He always arrives at nine. She's been waiting for him at nine o'clock every morning for eleven years.

Às nove menos cinco, põe o galão na mesa junto à janela — a mesa dele. Mais ninguém se senta ali. Os clientes habituais sabem. Os novos às vezes tentam, e a Leonor diz, com educação: "Desculpe, essa mesa está ocupada. Alguém espera." Eles olham à volta. Não está lá ninguém. "Ele vem", diz ela. E vem sempre. Põe uma torrada ao lado do galão e espera.

At five to nine, she puts the galão on the table by the window — his table. No one else sits there. The regulars know. New customers sometimes try, and Leonor says, politely: "Sorry, that table's taken. Someone's waiting." They look around. No one's there. "He's coming," she says. And he always comes. She sets a toast beside the galão and waits.
