O Número

Na cidade de Nova Ordem, toda a gente tem um número. Não há nomes. A rapariga do apartamento 7-F chama-se 7-F. Os pais chamam-se 7-D e 7-E. Na escola, a professora chama os alunos pelos números: "3-B, responde à pergunta."

In the city of New Order, everyone has a number. There are no names. The girl from apartment 7-F is called 7-F. Her parents are called 7-D and 7-E. At school, the teacher calls students by their numbers: "3-B, answer the question."

Um dia, 7-F encontra uma flor a crescer numa fenda do passeio. É vermelha. Ela nunca tinha visto uma flor assim. Senta-se no chão e olha para ela durante muito tempo.

One day, 7-F finds a flower growing in a crack in the pavement. It is red. She had never seen a flower like it. She sits on the ground and looks at it for a very long time.

Nessa noite, na cama, pensa: "Esta flor precisa de um nome." Pensa muito. Depois sussurra para si própria: "Chamo-te Rosa." A palavra soa estranha e bonita ao mesmo tempo. Ela repete: "Rosa. Rosa. Rosa."

That night, in bed, she thinks: "This flower needs a name." She thinks a lot. Then she whispers to herself: "I'll call you Rosa." The word sounds strange and beautiful at the same time. She repeats: "Rosa. Rosa. Rosa."

No dia seguinte, 7-F vai ver a flor outra vez. Está lá. E de repente pensa: "Eu também preciso de um nome." Por isso, em segredo, chama-se Rosa. Só ela sabe. Mas é suficiente.

The next day, 7-F goes to see the flower again. It is there. And suddenly she thinks: "I also need a name." So, in secret, she calls herself Rosa. Only she knows. But it is enough.
