A Fronteira

A cidade de Valmonde estava dividida ao meio desde há vinte anos. A Zona Norte era próspera e limpa. A Zona Sul era pobre e esquecida. Entre as duas havia uma fronteira de betão e arame farpado, com guardas armados em torres de vigia. Carla vivia no Sul. A mãe estava no Norte, doente, a morrer.

The city of Valmonde had been divided in half for twenty years. The North Zone was prosperous and clean. The South Zone was poor and forgotten. Between them was a border of concrete and barbed wire, with armed guards in watchtowers. Carla lived in the South. Her mother was in the North, ill, dying.

No posto de controlo, o oficial examinou os papéis de Carla. "Pedido negado. Os residentes do Sul precisam de um visto especial para cruzar." Carla explicou a situação da mãe. O oficial não levantou os olhos dos papéis. "As regras são as regras."

At the checkpoint, the official examined Carla's papers. "Request denied. South Zone residents need a special visa to cross." Carla explained her mother's situation. The official did not look up from the papers. "Rules are rules."

De noite, uma mulher mais velha no café disse baixinho a Carla: "Há um túnel. Debaixo da antiga fábrica de têxteis. Toda a gente sabe, mas ninguém fala." Carla hesitou. "É perigoso?" A mulher encolheu os ombros. "Mais perigoso é ficar."

At night, an older woman at the café said quietly to Carla: "There is a tunnel. Under the old textile factory. Everyone knows, but nobody talks." Carla hesitated. "Is it dangerous?" The woman shrugged. "More dangerous is staying."

Carla cruzou o túnel às três da manhã com uma lanterna e o coração na garganta. Do outro lado, encontrou uma rua iluminada, casas pintadas, um cheiro a comida quente. Chegou ao hospital quando o sol nascia.

Carla crossed the tunnel at three in the morning with a torch and her heart in her throat. On the other side, she found a lit street, painted houses, the smell of hot food. She reached the hospital as the sun was rising.

Ficou três dias com a mãe. Na hora de regressar, o guarda da fronteira — um jovem com cara de cansaço — olhou para os papéis dela e depois para ela. Fez uma pausa. "Tenho uma mãe também", disse. Carimbou os papéis e deixou-a passar.

She spent three days with her mother. When it was time to return, the border guard — a young man with a tired face — looked at her papers and then at her. He paused. "I have a mother too," he said. He stamped the papers and let her through.
