Inês is a painter and lives in Lisbon, near Bairro Alto. Her studio has a large north-facing window, with perfect light for working. But for six months she has been unable to paint. The canvas remains blank, week after week.
Marta, the owner of the gallery where Inês exhibits, begins to worry. "The autumn exhibition is in two months," she says on the phone. "You still have time, but we need at least ten new works." Inês promises she will paint, but when she hangs up the phone, she looks at the blank canvas and feels an enormous emptiness.
On a Friday afternoon, Inês takes the train to the Alentejo. Her mother lives in a small village near Évora, among wheat fields and olive trees. Inês spends the weekend walking through the fields. She brings a sketchbook and begins to draw the old olive trees, the stones in the walls, the golden light of the afternoon.
Come pouco, dorme pouco. Pinta as oliveiras do Alentejo com cores que nunca tinha usado antes — ocre, terracota, verde-escuro.
When she returns to Lisbon on Sunday evening, the sketchbook is full. On Monday morning, she places a new canvas on the easel and begins to paint. She does not stop for three days. She eats little, sleeps little. She paints the Alentejo olive trees in colours she had never used before — ochre, terracotta, dark green.
The autumn exhibition is the most visited of the year. Marta sells every work in the first week. Inês receives a phone call from an art critic from Berlin. But what pleases her most is a simple message from her mother: "I saw your olive trees in the newspaper. They look just like the ones here."
