O Detective Fonseca

O detective Fonseca tem trinta e oito anos e uma paciência extraordinária. As suas investigações são lentas, metódicas e quase sempre eficazes. Quando lhe pedem para observar o dono de um café em Alfama suspeito de receber mercadoria roubada, ele aceita sem hesitar. Instala-se numa mesa de esplanada do café em frente e começa a observar.

Detective Fonseca is thirty-eight years old and has extraordinary patience. His investigations are slow, methodical and almost always effective. When asked to observe the owner of a café in Alfama suspected of receiving stolen goods, he accepts without hesitation. He settles at an outdoor table at the café opposite and begins to observe.

No primeiro dia, Fonseca observa o homem durante oito horas. O suspeito abre o café às sete da manhã, serve cafés e pastéis de nata, fala com os clientes habituais e fecha às seis da tarde. Nada de suspeito. Fonseca toma notas: "Homem calmo, rotinas regulares, nada a assinalar."

On the first day, Fonseca observes the man for eight hours. The suspect opens the café at seven in the morning, serves coffees and pastéis de nata, talks to regular customers and closes at six in the afternoon. Nothing suspicious. Fonseca takes notes: "Calm man, regular routines, nothing to report."

No segundo dia, a mesma coisa. No terceiro dia, Fonseca começa a sentir que algo está errado — mas não com o homem do café. Com a sua própria investigação. Pede à agente que lhe enviou o caso uma fotografia do suspeito. Quando a imagem chega ao telefone, Fonseca olha para ela, olha para o homem atrás do balcão e percebe o problema: são dois homens diferentes.

On the second day, the same thing. On the third day, Fonseca begins to feel that something is wrong — but not with the café owner. With his own investigation. He asks the agent who sent him the case for a photograph of the suspect. When the image arrives on his phone, Fonseca looks at it, looks at the man behind the counter and understands the problem: they are two different men.

O verdadeiro suspeito era o empregado de limpeza, um homem quieto que chegava sempre a horas improváveis e saía com sacos que nunca entravam no café. Fonseca observou-o meia hora. Era tudo o que precisava. Às vezes, olhar para o sítio errado é o que nos ensina onde devemos olhar.

The real suspect was the cleaner, a quiet man who always arrived at improbable hours and left with bags that had never entered the café. Fonseca observed him for half an hour. That was all he needed. Sometimes, looking in the wrong place is what teaches us where we should be looking.
