O Telefonema

Sara trabalha numa empresa de contabilidade no centro do Porto. Na quinta-feira às três da tarde, o seu telemóvel toca com um número desconhecido. Uma voz feminina diz: "A Sara é casada com o Carlos Mendes?" Sara responde que sim. A voz continua: "Sei que o seu marido está em perigo. Não consigo dizer mais. Ligue-lhe já."

Sara works at an accounting firm in the centre of Porto. On Thursday at three in the afternoon, her mobile rings with an unknown number. A female voice says: "Are you married to Carlos Mendes?" Sara says yes. The voice continues: "I know your husband is in danger. I cannot say more. Call him now."

Sara liga ao Carlos. Não responde. Liga outra vez. Nada. Envia mensagens. Silêncio. O Carlos trabalha numa obra no lado norte da cidade — um lugar com pouca rede. Sara tenta ligar para o encarregado da obra. Também não responde. Ao fim de uma hora, Sara está com as mãos a tremer.

Sara calls Carlos. No answer. She calls again. Nothing. She sends messages. Silence. Carlos works on a building site on the north side of the city — a place with poor signal. Sara tries to call the site foreman. He also does not answer. After one hour, Sara's hands are shaking.

Pede ao chefe que saia mais cedo. Vai de Uber para a obra. O porteiro diz que o Carlos saiu ao meio-dia para o almoço e não voltou. Sara liga para os hospitais. Ninguém com o nome do marido. Liga à esquadra. Nada. Pensa em ligar aos pais dele — mas não quer preocupá-los sem razão.

She asks her boss if she can leave early. She takes an Uber to the building site. The security guard says Carlos left at midday for lunch and did not return. Sara calls the hospitals. Nobody with her husband's name. She calls the police station. Nothing. She thinks about calling his parents — but does not want to worry them without reason.

Às seis da tarde, o telemóvel toca. É o Carlos. "Olá, amor. Estou aqui em casa, já tomei banho. O que há para jantar?" Sara fica em silêncio três segundos. Depois: "Onde estiveste o dia todo?!" Carlos explica: o telemóvel caiu na betoneira de manhã e só nessa tarde comprou um telemóvel novo.

At six in the evening, the phone rings. It is Carlos. "Hi, love. I'm here at home, I've already had a shower. What's for dinner?" Sara is silent for three seconds. Then: "Where were you all day?!" Carlos explains: his phone fell into the concrete mixer in the morning and only that afternoon did he buy a new one.

Quanto ao telefonema misterioso, Carlos ri quando ouve a história. "Essa é a minha mãe. Comprou um telemóvel novo e estava a tentar ligar para te apresentar o número novo — mas ela nunca soube explicar-se bem." Sara respira fundo. Depois ri também. É a comédia mais cara que alguma vez viveu.

As for the mysterious phone call, Carlos laughs when he hears the story. "That's my mother. She bought a new phone and was trying to call you to introduce the new number — but she never knew how to explain herself well." Sara takes a deep breath. Then she laughs too. It is the most expensive comedy she has ever lived through.
