Os Passos

Eduardo é estudante de história na Universidade de Coimbra. Na época de exames, fica muitas vezes na biblioteca antiga do século XVIII a estudar até tarde. Gosta do silêncio pesado dos livros, do cheiro a papel velho, da luz amarela dos candeeiros de mesa.

Eduardo is a history student at the University of Coimbra. During exam season, he often stays in the old 18th-century library to study until late. He enjoys the heavy silence of the books, the smell of old paper, the yellow light of the desk lamps.

Numa quinta-feira à meia-noite, Eduardo é o único estudante que ficou. A bibliotecária já foi embora, deixando-o com a chave para fechar. Eduardo está a ler um tratado do século XVII quando ouve, claramente, passos no andar de cima. Pesados, lentos, regulares. Passo. Pausa. Passo. Pausa.

On a Thursday at midnight, Eduardo is the only student who has stayed. The librarian has already left, giving him the key to lock up. Eduardo is reading a 17th-century treatise when he hears, clearly, footsteps on the floor above. Heavy, slow, regular. Step. Pause. Step. Pause.

Eduardo para de respirar. Ouve outra vez. Passos definitivamente. Mas o edifício não tem segundo andar — é uma estrutura de um só piso, com um tecto de abóbada muito alto. Não há nada lá em cima. Eduardo sabe isso. Ainda assim, ouve os passos.

Eduardo stops breathing. He listens again. Definitely footsteps. But the building has no second floor — it is a single-storey structure with a very high vaulted ceiling. There is nothing up there. Eduardo knows this. And yet he hears the footsteps.

Ao fim de dez minutos de pânico crescente, Eduardo levanta-se e procura uma escada de serviço que sabe existir numa divisão lateral. Encontra-a. Sobe. Abre uma trapa. Encontra um espaço de serviço entre o tecto da biblioteca e o telhado — e, nesse espaço, um bando de pombos que caminha pelo soalho de madeira com passos pesados, lentos, regulares.

After ten minutes of growing panic, Eduardo gets up and looks for a service ladder he knows exists in a side room. He finds it. He climbs up. He opens a hatch. He finds a service space between the library ceiling and the roof — and in that space, a flock of pigeons walking across the wooden floor with heavy, slow, regular footsteps.

Eduardo desce, fecha a trapa e volta para a mesa. Respira fundo. Depois ri sozinho durante cinco minutos. Escreve no seu caderno de notas, onde estuda para os exames: "Investigação de campo, 00:37. Fantasmas identificados: pombos. Grau de perigo: nenhum. Grau de vergonha: elevado." Fecha o caderno e volta ao tratado do século XVII.

Eduardo climbs back down, closes the hatch and returns to his desk. He takes a deep breath. Then he laughs to himself for five minutes. He writes in his study notebook: "Field investigation, 00:37. Ghosts identified: pigeons. Danger level: none. Embarrassment level: high." He closes the notebook and returns to the 17th-century treatise.
