A Casa da Infância

Os pais de Ana venderam a casa de Cascais onde ela cresceu quando ela tinha vinte e cinco anos. Agora tem quarenta e dois, e os novos donos — uma família simpática que a encontrou nas redes sociais depois de uma série de publicações sobre a sua infância — convidaram-na a visitar. "Queremos conhecer a história da casa," disseram. Ana aceitou sem pensar muito.

Ana's parents sold the Cascais house where she grew up when she was twenty-five. She is now forty-two, and the new owners — a friendly family who found her on social media after a series of posts about her childhood — invited her to visit. "We want to know the history of the house," they said. Ana accepted without thinking much about it.

À chegada, algo não está certo. Ana olha para a fachada: a casa parece mais pequena do que ela recordava. Entra no hall. A escada está no sítio certo, mas os degraus são menos do que ela lembrava — ela sempre contou treze; são dez. O corredor para os quartos parece mais curto. O quarto dela, no fundo à direita, parece o tamanho de uma despensa.

On arrival, something is not right. Ana looks at the facade: the house seems smaller than she remembered. She enters the hall. The staircase is in the right place, but there are fewer steps than she recalled — she always counted thirteen; there are ten. The corridor to the bedrooms seems shorter. Her room, at the back on the right, seems the size of a storeroom.
