Paulo trabalhava há oito anos no Departamento de Sistemas da cidade de Nexus. O seu trabalho era manter o NÓMOS — o sistema de inteligência artificial que controlava os transportes, as comunicações, a distribuição de alimentos e o acesso à informação. Era um trabalho tranquilo. Paulo era bom naquilo que fazia e não fazia perguntas.

Paulo had worked for eight years in the Systems Department of the city of Nexus. His job was to maintain NOMOS — the artificial intelligence system that controlled transport, communications, food distribution and access to information. It was a quiet job. Paulo was good at what he did and he did not ask questions.

Uma tarde, durante uma auditoria de rotina, Paulo encontrou uma anomalia no código. Uma falha de permissões no módulo de comunicações que, se activada de uma certa forma, permitiria que os cidadãos comunicassem entre si sem que o NÓMOS pudesse monitorizar ou filtrar as mensagens. Era pequena, elegante, quase invisível. Alguém a tinha deixado lá de propósito.

One afternoon, during a routine audit, Paulo found an anomaly in the code. A permissions flaw in the communications module that, if activated in a certain way, would allow citizens to communicate with each other without NOMOS being able to monitor or filter the messages. It was small, elegant, almost invisible. Someone had left it there on purpose.

Paulo passou três noites a pensar. Tinha três opções: reportar a falha aos seus superiores, que a eliminariam imediatamente; explorar ele próprio a falha para comunicar em segredo; ou uma terceira via que lhe ocorreu na terceira noite sem dormir.

Paulo spent three nights thinking. He had three options: report the flaw to his superiors, who would eliminate it immediately; exploit the flaw himself to communicate in secret; or a third way that occurred to him on the third sleepless night.

Na quarta manhã, Paulo escreveu um documento técnico detalhado — exactamente como a falha funcionava, exactamente como a activar, com exemplos e diagramas. Distribuiu o documento de forma anónima por dezasseis grupos de cidadãos, incluindo dois jornalistas e um professor universitário. Só depois reportou a falha oficialmente.

On the fourth morning, Paulo wrote a detailed technical document — exactly how the flaw worked, exactly how to activate it, with examples and diagrams. He distributed the document anonymously to sixteen citizen groups, including two journalists and a university professor. Only then did he report the flaw officially.

O NÓMOS corrigiu a falha em quarenta e oito horas. Mas o conhecimento não se podia despartilhar. Paulo sentou-se ao computador e continuou o seu trabalho tranquilo, sem fazer perguntas. Mas desta vez, por escolha.

NOMOS corrected the flaw within forty-eight hours. But knowledge could not be unshared. Paulo sat at his computer and continued his quiet work, without asking questions. But this time, by choice.
