Marta Valente passava os dias a interpretar o que os outros diziam. Como intérprete simultânea de conferências, trabalhava dentro de uma cabine de vidro a transformar palavras de uma língua noutra, em tempo real, sem pausas e sem erros permitidos. Interpretara em sessões do Parlamento Europeu, em negociações comerciais entre governos e em conferências científicas sobre temas que mal entendia mas conseguia interpretar com precisão. Era, segundo os seus colegas, a melhor intérprete de francês-português da lista de Bruxelas.

Marta Valente spent her days interpreting what others said. As a simultaneous conference interpreter, she worked inside a glass booth transforming words from one language into another, in real time, without pauses and without mistakes permitted. She had interpreted at sessions of the European Parliament, in trade negotiations between governments, and at scientific conferences on topics she barely understood but could interpret with precision. She was, according to her colleagues, the best French-Portuguese interpreter on the Brussels roster.

Em setembro, depois de quatro anos em Bruxelas, Marta regressou a Lisboa para uma conferência da União Europeia sobre política de vizinhança. Ficou num hotel do Chiado, a dez minutos a pé do apartamento onde crescera. Na tarde livre antes do primeiro dia de trabalho, foi beber um café à Brasileira e foi aí que o viu: Tiago Neves, sentado à mesa do canto com um livro aberto à sua frente, exactamente como o recordava.

In September, after four years in Brussels, Marta returned to Lisbon for a European Union conference on neighbourhood policy. She stayed in a hotel in Chiado, ten minutes' walk from the apartment where she had grown up. On the free afternoon before the first working day, she went to have a coffee at Brasileira and it was there that she saw him: Tiago Neves, sitting at the corner table with an open book in front of him, exactly as she remembered him.
