A Avó Que Tinha Tudo

Dona Conceição tem setenta e dois anos e vive sozinha num apartamento no segundo andar de um prédio antigo em Coimbra. O apartamento tem três divisões, uma varanda com flores e uma cozinha cheia de cheiros bons. Ela tem uma pensão suficiente, tem saúde para a sua idade e tem muitos amigos no bairro. As vizinhas dizem sempre que ela tem muita sorte. Mas Dona Conceição sente que lhe falta alguma coisa, embora não consiga explicar bem o quê.

Dona Conceição is seventy-two years old and lives alone in a flat on the second floor of an old building in Coimbra. The flat has three rooms, a balcony with flowers and a kitchen full of good smells. She has a sufficient pension, she has good health for her age and she has many friends in the neighbourhood. The neighbours always say she is very lucky. But Dona Conceição feels something is missing, though she cannot quite explain what.

Ela tem dois filhos: o João, que vive no Porto com a mulher e dois filhos, e a Luísa, que vive em Lisboa com o marido e uma filha. Os netos têm seis, oito e onze anos. Dona Conceição adora-os. Tem fotografias deles por toda a casa. Tem a fotografia do Tomás na cozinha, a do Filipe na sala e a da Beatriz no quarto. Às vezes olha para as fotos e pensa: tenho tudo, mas não tenho os meus netos perto de mim.

She has two children: João, who lives in Porto with his wife and two children, and Luísa, who lives in Lisbon with her husband and a daughter. The grandchildren are six, eight and eleven years old. Dona Conceição adores them. She has photographs of them all over the house. She has a photo of Tomás in the kitchen, one of Filipe in the living room and one of Beatriz in the bedroom. Sometimes she looks at the photos and thinks: I have everything, but I do not have my grandchildren close to me.
