Para vs Por
Para and por are both often translated as "for" in English but have very different uses. Para expresses purpose, destination, and recipient; por expresses cause, means, exchange, and duration.

Para is used for: (1) purpose/goal (para estudar = in order to study), (2) destination (partir para Lisboa), (3) recipient (um presente para ela), (4) deadline (para amanhã = for/by tomorrow).
Por is used for: (1) cause/motive (fiz isso por amor), (2) agent in passive (escrito por = written by), (3) exchange (paguei 20 euros por isso), (4) duration (por duas horas), (5) movement through/along (passar pelo parque).
Comprei flores para a minha mãe.
I bought flowers for my mother.
Para = recipient.
Comprei flores por cinco euros.
I bought flowers for five euros.
Por = exchange/price.
Trabalho para viver, não vivo para trabalhar.
I work to live, I don't live to work.
Para = purpose.
Test: can you replace "for" with "in order to" or "destined for"? Use para. Can you replace it with "because of", "in exchange for", or "through"? Use por.
