As Fatias de Peixe

Era uma vez um pescador que vivia numa terra longínqua. Certo dia em que lançou as redes ao mar, apanhou um peixe muito bonito. O peixe, ao ver-se fora de água, pediu ao pescador que o lançasse de volta ao mar, prometendo-lhe que na próxima vez que fosse pescar apanharia muito mais. Acrescentou, porém, que se o voltasse a apanhar, podia então ficar com ele. O pescador largou-o, e no dia seguinte puxou uma rede tão cheia de peixe que não sabia onde pôr tudo.

Once there was a fisherman who lived in a faraway land. One day when he cast his nets into the sea, he caught a very beautiful fish. The fish, finding itself out of water, asked the fisherman to throw it back into the sea, promising him that the next time he went fishing he would catch far more. It added, however, that if he caught it again, he could then keep it. The fisherman released it, and the next day he pulled in a net so full of fish that he did not know where to put it all.

Poucos dias depois, o pescador lançou as redes no mesmo lugar e voltou a apanhar o belo peixe. O peixe disse-lhe então: "Leva-me para casa e corta-me em doze fatias. Dá três à tua mulher, três à tua égua, três à tua cadela, e as restantes três enterra no teu jardim." O pescador fez exatamente o que lhe fora dito. Passou um ano, e a mulher deu à luz três rapazes, a égua pariu três potros, a cadela teve três leões, e no jardim cresceram três lanças.

A few days later, the fisherman cast his nets in the same place and caught the beautiful fish again. The fish then said to him: "Take me home and cut me into twelve slices. Give three to your wife, three to your mare, three to your bitch, and bury the remaining three in your garden." The fisherman did exactly as he was told. A year passed, and his wife gave birth to three boys, the mare bore three colts, the dog had three lions, and three lances grew up in the garden.

Quando os três irmãos cresceram e se tornaram homens, pediram ao pai que lhes desse a cada um um cavalo, um leão e uma lança, pois queriam partir a viajar. Os pais, contrariados mas sem força para recusar, deram-lhes licença. Os rapazes saíram juntos pelo mesmo caminho até chegarem a uma encruzilhada onde três estradas se cruzavam. Ali separaram-se: o mais velho foi para a esquerda, o do meio foi para a direita, e o mais novo tomou o caminho do centro. Combinaram encontrar-se no mesmo lugar dali a um ano.

When the three brothers grew up and became men, they asked their father to give each of them a horse, a lion, and a lance, for they wished to set out and travel. Their parents, reluctant but without the heart to refuse, gave them leave. The boys set out together along the same road until they reached a crossroads where three roads met. There they separated: the eldest went left, the middle one went right, and the youngest took the middle road. They agreed to meet at the same spot in a year.

O irmão mais velho chegou a uma aldeia onde se erguia uma torre altíssima. Ficou a viver numa casa e, ao fim de uma semana, casou com a dona da casa. Depois do casamento, perguntou à mulher o que era aquela torre. Ela respondeu que era a "Torre da Morte": quem lá entrava não voltava vivo. O jovem disse que ele entraria e voltaria. Nessa noite, deitou-se com a lança entre si e a esposa, e na manhã seguinte foi à torre com o seu leão.

The eldest brother arrived at a village where a very tall tower stood. He took lodgings in a house and, after a week, married the woman who owned it. After the wedding he asked his wife what that tower was. She replied that it was the "Tower of Death": whoever entered never returned alive. The young man said that he would enter and return. That night he lay down with the lance between himself and his wife, and the following morning he went to the tower with his lion.

À porta da torre apareceu uma velha que o desafiou para uma luta, mas pediu-lhe primeiro que prendesse o leão com um dos seus cabelos. O jovem aceitou. Quando já estava quase a ser vencido, chamou pelo leão: "Avança, leão meu!" Mas a velha gritou: "Fica espesso, cabelo meu!" — e o cabelo tornou-se numa corrente de ferro. A velha derrubou o rapaz e cortou-lhe a cabeça, lançando-a para uma caverna subterrânea. Passado um ano, o irmão do meio foi à sua procura e teve exatamente o mesmo destino.

At the tower door an old woman appeared and challenged him to a wrestling match, but first asked him to tie the lion with one of her hairs. The young man agreed. When he was nearly overcome he called for his lion: "Come forward, my lion!" But the old woman cried: "Thicken, my hair!" — and the hair became an iron chain. The old woman knocked the boy down and cut off his head, tossing it into a subterranean cave. A year later, the middle brother went looking for him and met exactly the same fate.

O irmão mais novo, vendo que os outros não voltavam, pediu ao pai licença para os ir procurar. O pai lamentou-se, mas o rapaz prometeu-lhe: "Deixa-me ir, pai, e eu voltarei no prazo de um ano com os dois irmãos e com muito dinheiro." Tomou o mesmo caminho, chegou à mesma torre e casou com a mesma mulher. Quando foi à torre, a velha pediu-lhe que prendesse o leão com um dos seus cabelos. O rapaz prometeu fazê-lo, mas em vez disso atirou o cabelo por cima de uma parede.

The youngest brother, seeing that the others did not return, asked his father for leave to go look for them. His father lamented, but the boy promised him: "Let me go, father, and I shall return within a year with both brothers and much wealth." He took the same road, reached the same tower, and married the same woman. When he went to the tower, the old woman asked him to tie the lion with one of her hairs. The boy promised to do so, but instead he threw the hair over a wall.

Quando a luta estava quase perdida, ele chamou pelo seu leão: "Vem à minha ajuda, leão!" A velha gritou: "Fica espesso, cabelo meu!" Mas o leão não estava preso e saltou sobre ela, deixando-a indefesa no chão. O rapaz ia cortar-lhe a cabeça, quando ela implorou que lhe poupasse a vida: entregaria os irmãos mortos e deixá-lo-ia visitar a torre. O rapaz poupou-a, deixou o leão sobre ela e foi percorrer a torre. Lá dentro encontrou três princesas encantadas, que libertou, e depois fez a velha conduzi-lo até à caverna onde os irmãos jaziam.

When the fight was nearly lost, he called for his lion: "Come to my aid, lion!" The old woman cried: "Thicken, my hair!" But the lion was not tied up and leapt upon her, leaving her helpless on the ground. The boy was about to cut off her head when she begged him to spare her life: she would return his dead brothers and let him visit the tower. The boy spared her, left the lion over her, and went through the tower. Inside he found three enchanted princesses, whom he freed, and then made the old woman lead him to the cave where his brothers lay.

No fundo da caverna, o jovem viu montes de corpos, com os troncos de um lado e as cabeças do outro. Ficou horrorizado. A velha disse-lhe para ir a um armário buscar um pote de unguento, untar os pescoços com ele e juntar as cabeças aos corpos, e eles ressuscitariam. Impôs, porém, a condição de que apenas os seus irmãos fossem assim tratados. O rapaz recusou-se a aceitar isso e exigiu que todos os corpos ali presentes fossem curados. Como a velha se recusou a ceder, ele matou-a.

At the bottom of the cave, the young man saw heaps of bodies, with the trunks on one side and the heads on the other. He was horrified. The old woman told him to go to a cupboard, fetch a pot of ointment, rub the necks with it, and join the heads to the bodies, and they would be revived. She insisted, however, that only his brothers be treated in this way. The boy refused to accept this and demanded that all the bodies there be healed. As the old woman refused to yield, he killed her.

O jovem foi buscar o unguento e untou os corpos e pescoços de todos. Pouco a pouco, os mortos foram levantando-se e partindo cada um para o seu país. O rapaz e os seus irmãos casaram com as princesas que tinham encontrado na torre e partiram para os seus reinos. Não se esqueceram de levar ao pai e à mãe muitas riquezas, cumprindo assim a promessa feita antes de partirem.

The young man fetched the ointment and rubbed all the bodies and necks. One by one, the dead began rising and departing each to his own country. The boy and his brothers married the princesses they had found in the tower and set off for their kingdoms. They did not forget to bring their father and mother great riches, thus fulfilling the promise made before they left.
