O Coelho

Era uma vez uma rainha que olhou pela janela do palácio e viu um homem a passar na rua a vender flores. Pediu à sua dama de honor que fosse comprá-las. A dama comprou-as e plantou-as no jardim. A rainha ia todos os dias ver como cresciam. Um dia, enquanto passeava no jardim, viu um coelho a correr. Pediu à dama que o apanhasse. A dama agarrou-o e atou-o com a sua jarreteira. Mas enquanto continuavam o passeio, o coelho escapou, levando a jarreteira.

Once there was a queen who looked out of the palace window and saw a man passing in the street selling flowers. She asked her lady-in-waiting to go and buy them. The maid bought them and planted them in the garden. The queen went every day to see how they grew. One day, while walking in the garden, she saw a rabbit running. She asked her maid to catch it. The maid grabbed it and tied it with her garter. But while they continued their walk, the rabbit escaped, taking the garter with it.

No dia seguinte, à mesma hora, a princesa voltou ao jardim e tornou a ver o mesmo coelho. Desta vez a dama atou-o com um lenço. Mas o coelho voltou a escapar com o lenço. Na terceira vez, a princesa tirou o colar de ouro com o retrato do rei e pediu à dama que atasse o coelho com ele, pois assim podiam passear sem preocupação. Mas o coelho fugiu de novo, levando o colar e o retrato. A princesa ficou tão desolada que adoeceu de tristeza.

The next day at the same hour, the princess returned to the garden and again saw the same rabbit. This time the maid tied it with a handkerchief. But the rabbit again escaped with the handkerchief. On the third occasion, the princess removed her gold necklace with the king's portrait and asked the maid to tie the rabbit with it, so they could walk without worry. But the rabbit fled again, taking the necklace and portrait. The princess was so desolate she fell ill with grief.

Os médicos da corte vieram e disseram que a princesa sofria por amor, e mandaram que a distraíssem com passeios e histórias. Muitas pessoas foram ao palácio contar as histórias mais belas que conheciam, mas a princesa não ligava a nenhuma. Duas velhas irmãs que viviam juntas souberam da notícia. Uma delas disse: «Sinto-me capaz de ir ao palácio com as minhas histórias e divertir a princesa.» A irmã tentou dissuadi-la, mas a velha não quis saber e partiu com uns pães de milho e umas sardinhas assadas.

The court physicians came and said the princess was suffering from lovesickness, and ordered that she be distracted with walks and stories. Many people came to the palace to tell the most beautiful stories they knew, but the princess paid no attention to any of them. Two elderly sisters who lived together heard the news. One of them said: "I feel quite capable of going to the palace with my stories and amusing the princess." Her sister tried to dissuade her, but the old woman would not be swayed and set off with some cornbread loaves and roasted sardines.

Pelo caminho, a velha sentou-se num marco de pedra a descansar. De debaixo do marco saiu um burro com aljavas de ouro, conduzido por mãos que não se viam. A velha esperou que o burro voltasse. Quando voltou, agarrou-se às aljavas e desceu umas escadas até chegar a um palácio de grande esplendor. Havia uma mesa posta com todas as iguarias, e a velha sentou-se e comeu tudo. Depois olhou em volta e viu mãos a fazer todo o trabalho, mas não havia ninguém. Quando escureceu, deitou-se.

On the way, the old woman sat down on a milestone to rest. From under the stone came a donkey with golden panniers, led by invisible hands. The old woman waited for the donkey to return. When it did, she held on to the panniers and descended some steps until she reached a palace of great splendour. There was a table laid with all manner of delicacies, and the old woman sat down and ate everything. Then she looked around and saw hands doing all the work, but there was no one there. When it grew dark, she lay down.

De muito cedo, a velha viu um coelho entrar pelo jardim. O coelho foi a um alguidar, mergulhou nele e transformou-se num príncipe muito bonito. Dirigiu-se ao toucador, começou a pentear-se e disse em voz alta: «Ó pente que me penteia, ó fitas que me prendem o cabelo, pudésseis mostrar-me aquela que desfalece de amor por mim!» Depois tornou a mergulhar no alguidar e voltou a ser coelho, partindo. A velha tomou o seu pequeno-almoço e, quando o burro saiu com as aljavas de ouro, agarrou-se a elas e subiu.

Very early in the morning, the old woman saw a rabbit come in from the garden. The rabbit went to a basin, plunged into it, and transformed into a very handsome prince. He went to the dressing table, began combing his hair and said aloud: "Oh comb that smooths my hair, oh ribbons that bind my tresses, could you but show me she who pines in love for me!" Then he plunged back into the basin and became the rabbit again, and departed. The old woman had her breakfast and, when the donkey went out with the golden panniers, she held on to them and went up.

A velha foi ao palácio da princesa e pediu para a ver, dizendo que tinha uma história que de certeza a divertia. A princesa estava deitada num canapé. Quando a velha começou a contar a história do coelho, a princesa sentou-se imediatamente, pediu caldo para beber e disse à velha que continuasse. Quando a história acabou, a princesa disse que queria ir ver o palácio e o coelho. Melhorou de saúde, e um dia, já completamente recuperada, foi com a dama de honor e a velha até ao marco de pedra.

The old woman went to the princess's palace and asked to see her, saying she had a story that would surely amuse her. The princess was lying on a couch. When the old woman began telling the story of the rabbit, the princess sat up at once, asked for some broth to drink, and told the old woman to continue. When the story was finished, the princess said she wanted to go and see the palace and the rabbit. Her health began to improve, and one day, fully recovered, she went with her lady-in-waiting and the old woman to the milestone.

Pouco depois saiu o burro com as aljavas de ouro. As três agarraram-se ao burro e desceram para o palácio. A princesa ficou maravilhada com tanto esplendor e com as mãos a trabalhar sem que se visse ninguém. Foram percorrendo o palácio até chegarem a um quarto. Quando a dama de honor ia a entrar, deu um grito e fugiu, dizendo que havia um homem morto lá dentro. A princesa disse-lhe que não tinha de ter medo e entrou ela própria. Deitou água sobre o corpo e começou a rezar. De repente, o homem morto voltou à vida e transformou-se no príncipe bonito, o mesmo que a velha tinha visto transformar-se em coelho.

Shortly after, the donkey came out with the golden panniers. All three held on and descended to the palace. The princess was amazed at such splendour and at the hands working with no one to be seen. They went through the palace until they reached a room. When the lady-in-waiting was about to enter, she let out a scream and fled, saying there was a dead man inside. The princess told her not to be afraid and entered herself. She poured water over the body and began to pray. Suddenly the dead man came back to life and transformed into the handsome prince, the very same one the old woman had seen transform into a rabbit.

No mesmo instante, todas as mãos sem dono tomaram a forma de pessoas e revelaram ser os membros de uma corte magnífica que estava encantada. O príncipe agradeceu com emoção à princesa por ter quebrado o feitiço. A princesa perguntou para que serviam todos aqueles preparativos e o trabalho no palácio. O príncipe respondeu que era para o casamento da princesa de Nápoles. Muito surpreendida, ela disse: «Mas eu sou a princesa de Nápoles!» «Então és destinada a mim», respondeu o príncipe. A princesa aceitou com grande alegria, casaram com grande pompa e ficaram todos naquele palácio a viver muito felizes.

At that instant, all the disembodied hands took the form of people and revealed themselves to be the members of a magnificent court that had been spell-bound. The prince gratefully thanked the princess for breaking the spell. The princess asked what purpose all those preparations and work in the palace served. The prince replied it was for the wedding of the Princess of Naples. Very surprised, she said: "But I am the Princess of Naples!" "Then you are destined for me," replied the prince. The princess accepted with great joy, they married with great pomp, and everyone remained in that palace living very happily together.

A velha era muito estimada por todos, mas andava triste. Quando lhe perguntavam o que tinha, dizia que queria voltar para a sua casa. Carregaram-na com muitas riquezas e enviaram-na de volta acompanhada de um página. Ao chegar a casa, a velha disse contente: «Ó minha casa, minha casinha; não há nada como a minha casinha!» E assim todos ficaram felizes, cada um no seu lugar.

The old woman was held in great esteem by all, but she walked about looking sad. When they asked what was wrong, she said she wanted to return to her own home. They loaded her with many riches and sent her back accompanied by a page. On arriving home, the old woman said happily: "Oh my house, my own little house; there is nothing like my own little home!" And so everyone was happy, each in their own place.
