A Corça da Maçã de Ouro

Era uma vez uma mulher que tinha um filho e viviam em grande pobreza. O rapaz ia todos os dias ao pinhal buscar lenha. Num desses dias, ao andar pela floresta, viu uma corça muito pequena e muito bela aproximar-se dele com uma maçã de ouro pendurada ao pescoço. A corça começou a falar com ele a perguntar o que fazia ali, e depois perguntou-lhe se ele queria ir ver o seu abrigo em troca de muito dinheiro. O rapaz ouviu então uma voz que lhe disse: "Não aceites nada dela!" E respondeu à corça que não queria nada.

Once there was a woman who had a son and they lived in great poverty. The boy went every day to the pine forest to gather firewood. On one of those days, as he walked through the forest, he saw a very small and very beautiful hind approach him with a golden apple hanging from its neck. The hind began to speak to him, asking what he was doing there, and then asked him if he would like to come and see her lair in exchange for a great deal of money. The boy then heard a voice say: "Accept nothing from her!" And he replied to the hind that he wanted nothing.

A corça voltou a insistir: "Vem ao meu abrigo, rapaz, e dar-te-ei muito dinheiro e farei de ti um homem muito feliz!" A voz disse de novo: "Não aceites nada, mas diz-lhe que queres a maçã de ouro que ela traz ao pescoço." O rapaz seguiu o conselho e disse à corça: "A única coisa que quero é a maçã de ouro que tens; mais nada." A corça deu-lha dizendo: "Aqui tens, leva-a então!" O rapaz apanhou-a e dividiu-a em duas. Imediatamente saíram quatro gigantes que lhe perguntaram: "Que desejas?" O rapaz pediu que levassem toda aquela lenha para casa da sua mãe até ela ter mais do que precisava.

The hind insisted again: "Come to my lair, boy, and I will give you much money and make you a very happy man!" The voice said again: "Accept nothing, but tell her you want the golden apple she carries at her neck." The boy followed the advice and said to the hind: "The only thing I want is the golden apple you have; nothing else." The hind gave it to him saying: "Here, take it then!" The boy took it and divided it in two. Immediately four giants emerged and asked him: "What do you wish?" The boy asked that they carry all that firewood to his mother's house until she had more than she needed.

O rapaz voltou a abrir a maçã e os gigantes apareceram de novo a perguntar: "Que desejas?" "Quero um palácio com uma princesa lá dentro, e tudo o que for necessário." Os gigantes puseram-se imediatamente a trabalhar, erguendo um palácio magnífico, com uma princesa lindíssima à sua espera lá dentro. O rapaz tomou posse do palácio e foi lá viver. A sua vida mudou por completo — de pobre buscador de lenha passou a habitar um palácio esplêndido com uma princesa ao seu lado.

The boy opened the apple again and the giants appeared once more asking: "What do you wish?" "I want a palace with a princess inside, and everything necessary." The giants immediately set to work, raising a magnificent palace, with a most beautiful princess waiting for him inside. The boy took possession of the palace and went to live there. His life changed completely — from a poor firewood gatherer he went to inhabiting a splendid palace with a princess by his side.

Havia por ali um homem que, ao ver a riqueza e boa sorte do rapaz, ficou cheio de inveja. Falou com uma bruxa que conhecia e pediu-lhe que arranjasse maneira de lhe roubar a maçã. A bruxa conseguiu fazê-lo, e no instante em que a maçã foi roubada tudo desapareceu: o palácio transformou-se numa praia, e o rapaz e a princesa ficaram sem um fio de roupa no corpo, no meio daquela praia desolada. Puseram-se a chorar e a lamentar a sua desgraça.

There was a man nearby who, upon seeing the boy's wealth and good fortune, was filled with envy. He spoke to a witch he knew and asked her to find a way to steal the apple. The witch managed to do so, and at the instant the apple was stolen everything disappeared: the palace turned into a beach, and the boy and the princess were left without a stitch of clothing on their bodies, in the middle of that desolate shore. They began to weep and lament their misfortune.

Depois de algum tempo, o rapaz olhou em redor e disse à princesa: "Melhor voltares para casa do teu pai. Eu fico aqui." A princesa regressou a casa, e o jovem começou a vaguear pela praia sem saber o que fazer. Encontrou então uma velhinha — que era Nossa Senhora, embora ele não soubesse. Ela perguntou-lhe onde ia. "Ando por aqui sem destino porque não sei o que hei de fazer." A Senhora disse-lhe: "Ouve-me bem: daqui a pouco encontrarás muitos gatos gordos e bem cuidados, mas não apanhes nenhum deles. Quando encontrares um muito magro e cheio de sarna, esse é que deves levar contigo."

After some time, the boy looked around and said to the princess: "It is better you go back to your father's house. I will stay here." The princess returned home, and the young man began to wander the beach not knowing what to do. He then came upon a little old woman — who was Our Lady, though he did not know it. She asked him where he was going. "I am wandering here aimlessly because I do not know what to do." The Lady said to him: "Listen well: before long you will come across many fat and sleek cats, but do not pick up any of them. When you find one very thin and covered in mange, that is the one you must take with you."

O rapaz caminhou pela praia e encontrou muitos gatos gordos e lustrosos. Deixou-os passar. Mais à frente viu um gato muito magro e em mau estado. Agarrou-o pelo pescoço e foi embora com ele. Ao andar pela praia avistou um navio e embarcou. O homem que lhe roubara a maçã, ao ver o rapaz no navio, mandou prendê-lo e fechá-lo numa torre. O rapaz levou o gato para a torre. O homem que lhe dava comida só lhe trazia um feijão por dia, e o rapaz comia metade e dava a outra metade ao gato. O gato caçava ratos e ratazanas, trazia-os ao rapaz, comia metade e dava-lhe a outra metade.

The boy walked along the beach and came across many fat and glossy cats. He let them pass. Further along he saw a very thin and mangy cat. He grabbed it by the neck and went away with it. As he walked along the beach he spotted a ship and boarded it. The man who had stolen his apple, upon seeing the boy on the ship, had him arrested and locked in a tower. The boy took the cat with him to the tower. The man who brought his food only gave him a single bean each day, and the boy ate half and gave the other half to the cat. The cat hunted mice and rats, brought them to the boy, ate half, and gave him the other half.

Um dia, enquanto o gato espreitava furtivamente por uma fenda à caça, avistou um papel dobrado. Começou a miar desesperadamente a chamar o rapaz. Ele foi ver o que se passava e encontrou uma carta do rei dos ratos a perguntar o que podia fazer por ele para que o gato, em troca, deixasse os ratos em paz e não caçasse mais nenhum. O rapaz mandou dizer que a única forma de o rei dos ratos o servir era tentar recuperar a maçã de ouro que lhe fora roubada. O rei dos ratos organizou os seus súbditos em exército e foi ao lugar onde estava a maçã de ouro.

One day, while the cat was peeping furtively through a crack watching for prey, it spotted a folded piece of paper. It began to mew desperately, calling the boy. He went to see what was happening and found a letter from the king of the rats asking what he could do for him so that the cat, in recompense, would leave the rats in peace and hunt no more. The boy sent word that the only way the king of the rats could serve him was by trying to recover the golden apple that had been stolen from him. The king of the rats formed his subjects into an army and went to the place where the golden apple was to be found.

O homem trazia a maçã pendurada ao pescoço. Os ratos puseram-se a trabalhar com muita astúcia e prudência, esperando que o homem adormecesse, e colocaram-se nos dois lados do homem que dormia, prontos para agir. Um dos ratos começou a fazer cócegas no nariz do homem e a tapá-lhe a respiração com a cauda. O homem acordou a sentir-se sufocado e levantou a cabeça. Os ratos, aproveitando o instante, tiraram-lhe a corrente com a maçã do pescoço e levaram-na em triunfo para o rei dos ratos, que a entregou pessoalmente ao rapaz na torre.

The man was wearing the apple hanging around his neck. The rats set to work with great cunning and caution, waiting for the man to fall asleep and positioning themselves on either side of him, ready to act. One of the rats began to tickle the man's nose and to stop his breath with its tail. The man woke feeling stifled and raised his head. The rats, seizing the instant, removed the chain with the apple from his neck and carried it off in triumph to the king of the rats, who personally delivered it to the boy in the tower.

Mal o gato avistou a maçã a chegar, começou a miar em alto e bom som a chamar o rapaz. Ele aproximou-se e tomou posse dela de novo com grande alegria. Abriu-a, e os gigantes saíram imediatamente a perguntar: "Que desejas?" O rapaz respondeu: "Quero um palácio, e quero de volta a minha princesa." Em instantes tudo voltou como antes. O rapaz foi ter com o rei e pediu a sua majestade que mandasse executar o homem que lhe roubara a maçã de ouro. E o rapaz e a princesa viveram para sempre felizes no seu belo palácio, nunca mais se separando.

As soon as the cat spotted the apple arriving, it began to mew loudly calling the boy. He came over and took possession of it again with great delight. He opened it, and the giants immediately emerged asking: "What do you wish?" The boy replied: "I want a palace, and I want my princess back." In an instant everything returned as before. The boy went to the king and asked his majesty to have the man who had stolen his golden apple put to death. And the boy and the princess lived happily ever after in their beautiful palace, never to be separated again.
