O Talo de Couve

Era uma vez uma rapariga filha de gente pobre que tinha uma couve na sua horta. Todos os dias ela regava a couve com muito cuidado e ficava a olhar para o talo a ver quando a planta deitaria semente. Um dia reparou que no talo da couve havia uma escadinha por onde se podia descer para debaixo da terra. Desceu os degraus e encontrou-se de repente num palácio espléndido, com uma mesa posta com muita fartura e uma cama muito bonita.

Once there was a girl born to poor people who had a cabbage in her kitchen garden. Every day she watered the cabbage with great care and would watch the stalk waiting to see when the plant would go to seed. One day she noticed that on the cabbage stalk there was a little staircase by which one could descend underground. She went down the steps and suddenly found herself in a splendid palace, with a table laid with great abundance and a very beautiful bed.

A rapariga sentou-se à mesa e comeu com apetite tudo o que lá estava, depois subiu pelo talo e voltou para casa. Sempre que sentia fome, descia secretamente ao palácio e comia as delícias que lá encontrava. A rapariga foi engordando, para espanto dos pais, que nunca a viam comer. À noite, quando os pais adormeciam, descia a pouquinhos pelo talo da couve e deitava-se na cama magnífica do palácio.

The girl sat at the table and ate eagerly everything that was there, then climbed back up the stalk and returned home. Whenever she was hungry, she would secretly descend to the palace and eat the delicacies she found there. The girl began to put on weight, to the astonishment of her parents, who never saw her eat anything. At night, when her parents fell asleep, she crept down the cabbage stalk and lay down on the magnificent bed in the palace.

A mãe, que começava a desconfiar da filha, uma noite levantou-se da cama para a seguir. Desceu atrás dela e viu-a deitar-se numa cama onde havia uma besta adormecida. A mãe acendeu uma vela e foi até à cama, levantou as cobertas — e três gotas de cera caíram sobre a besta adormecida. No mesmo instante, a besta transformou-se num príncipe. O príncipe acordou perturbado e disse à mãe: "A senhora não faz ideia do mal que me fez! Quebrou o meu encantamento, e agora não posso casar com a sua filha."

The mother, who had begun to suspect her daughter, one night got up from bed to follow her. She climbed down behind her and saw her lie down on a bed where a beast lay sleeping. The mother lit a candle and went to the bed, lifted the covers — and three drops of wax fell on the sleeping beast. At that very instant the beast transformed into a prince. The prince woke up troubled and said to the mother: "You have no idea what harm you have done me! You have broken my enchantment, and now I cannot marry your daughter."

O príncipe disse à rapariga que teria de abandonar o palácio. Deu-lhe uma roca de ouro, um par de sapatos de ferro e um cajado, e disse-lhe que quando os sapatos estivessem gastos voltasse a procurá-lo. A rapariga partiu e caminhou e caminhou durante muito tempo. Os sapatos foram gastando e ela foi a pedir esmola pelos caminhos. Encontrou uma velha que lhe ouviu a história e lhe disse que já era tarde demais para casar com o príncipe, pois havia já uma princesa no palácio destinada a ele. Mas deu-lhe uma roca de ouro, uma roda de fiar e um novelo, e desejou-lhe boa sorte.

The prince told the girl she would have to leave the palace. He gave her a golden distaff, a pair of iron shoes and a staff, and told her that when the shoes wore out she should come back to find him. The girl departed and walked and walked for a long time. The shoes wore away and she went begging along the roads. She met an old woman who listened to her story and told her it was already too late to marry the prince, for there was already a princess in the palace destined for him. But she gave her a golden distaff, a spinning wheel and a skein, and wished her good luck.

A rapariga chegou às portas do palácio com os sapatos e as roupas todos rotos e pediu esmola. A princesa, ao ver-lhe a roca de ouro, mandou perguntar-lhe quanto queria por ela. A rapariga respondeu que, se a princesa lhe desse a roca, devia deixá-la dormir uma noite no quarto do príncipe. A princesa não queria consentir, mas a mãe do príncipe disse-lhe que deixasse, pois o príncipe tomaria um sonífero e não daria conta de nada. Assim aconteceu: a rapariga entrou no quarto e dormiu aos pés do príncipe; mas durante a noite, ao acordar, começou a murmurar:

The girl arrived at the palace gates with her shoes and clothes all torn and begged for alms. The princess, on seeing her golden distaff, sent word asking how much she wanted for it. The girl replied that if the princess gave her the distaff, she should allow her to sleep one night in the prince's chamber. The princess did not want to consent, but the prince's mother told her to allow it, for the prince would take a sleeping draught and would not notice a thing. And so it happened: the girl entered the chamber and slept at the prince's feet; but during the night, on waking, she began to murmur:

"Príncipe do meu amor, vim muitas léguas para te ver, meu senhor! Os meus sapatos estão gastos, o meu cajado está roto, e mesmo assim aqui estou de volta contigo!" O príncipe não respondeu, pois dormia profundamente, e ao amanhecer mandaram-na embora. Mas a rapariga ficou à porta do palácio a fiar com a sua roda de ouro. A princesa viu-a e mandou perguntar-lhe pelo instrumento. A rapariga pôs as mesmas condições, e de novo lhe foi dado que dormisse no quarto do príncipe — e de novo ele dormiu graças à poção.

"Prince of my love, I have come many leagues to see you, my lord! My shoes are worn out, my staff is broken, and yet here I am back with you!" The prince did not reply, for he slept deeply, and at dawn they sent her away. But the girl stayed at the palace gate spinning with her golden wheel. The princess saw her and sent word asking about the instrument. The girl set the same conditions, and once again she was allowed to sleep in the prince's chamber — and once again he slept deeply thanks to the potion.

Mas um criado que dormia num quarto próximo ouviu a rapariga a falar durante a noite e contou tudo ao príncipe. O príncipe ficou muito admirado e jurou que nessa noite não beberia a poção. Na terceira noite, a princesa tornou a pedir o novelo de ouro e a rapariga voltou a pôr as mesmas condições. O príncipe recebeu a poção, mas fingiu bebê-la e deitou-a fora, mandando o criado sair do quarto. A rapariga entrou e voltou a murmurar as suas palavras. O príncipe ouviu-a desta vez e ficou muito comovido, mas perturbado, pois lembrou-se de que estava prometido à princesa.

But a valet who slept in a neighbouring chamber heard the girl speaking during the night and told the prince everything. The prince was very astonished and swore that night he would not drink the potion. On the third night, the princess again asked for the golden skein and the girl again set the same conditions. The prince received the potion, but pretended to drink it and threw it away, ordering the valet to leave the chamber. The girl entered and again murmured her words. The prince heard her this time and was deeply moved, but troubled, for he remembered he was promised to the princess.

O príncipe mandou a rapariga ficar no quarto e não partir. Quando chegou o dia do casamento, pediu ao pai da princesa que resolvesse uma questão: o seu quarto tinha duas chaves; a primeira perdera-se, mas ele nunca perdera a esperança de a encontrar; ora que mandara fazer uma chave nova, a velha aparecera — qual devia guardar? O pai da princesa respondeu que em tal caso o aconselhava a ficar com a chave velha.

The prince told the girl to stay in the chamber and not to leave. When the wedding day arrived, he asked the princess's father to settle a question: his chamber had two keys; the first had been lost, but he had never lost hope of finding it; now that he had had a new key made, the old one had appeared — which should he keep? The princess's father replied that in such a case he advised him to keep the old key.

O príncipe contou então toda a história da rapariga ao rei, lembrando-lhe que fora ele próprio quem dera a sentença. Casou com a rapariga, que havia sofrido tanto para o encontrar, e a princesa partiu para outro reino. O talo de couve secou e caiu, mas o palácio subterrâneo ficou, e os dois viveram nele muito felizes, pois o amor verdadeiro que resistira ao sofrimento e à espera é o amor que nunca mais se perde.

The prince then told the whole story of the girl to the king, reminding him that it was he himself who had given the verdict. He married the girl, who had suffered so much to find him, and the princess departed for another kingdom. The cabbage stalk withered and fell, but the underground palace remained, and the two lived in it very happily, for true love that had withstood suffering and waiting is the love that is never lost again.
