A Torre da Má Sorte

Era uma vez uma mulher que tinha três filhos. O mais velho pediu-lhe a bênção um dia e disse-lhe que, se ela lhe desse um cavalo e um leão, partiria a ver mundo. A mãe cedeu, e o filho partiu. Viajou durante muito tempo até encontrar uma velha lavadeira à beira de um ribeiro. "Que fazes aí, avózinha?" perguntou ele. "Lavo roupa, meu filho, e assim farei até ao fim da vida, porque uma vez lavei num domingo e fui amaldiçoada." O rapaz perguntou-lhe então que torre era aquela ao longe.

Once there was a woman who had three sons. The eldest asked her blessing one day and told her that if she gave him a horse and a lion, he would set out to see the world. The mother agreed, and the son departed. He travelled for a long time until he found an old washerwoman by a stream. "What are you doing there, old woman?" he asked. "I am washing clothes, my son, and so I shall do until the end of my days, because I once washed on a Sunday and was cursed." The young man then asked her what tower that was in the distance.

"Ah, meu filho, essa é a Torre da Má Sorte. Quem lá entra nunca mais sai." O rapaz respondeu com arrogância: "Eu entro e saio, e ainda te encontrarei aqui quando voltar." Chegou à torre — que por dentro parecia uma estalagem — e pediu pousada à velha que estava à porta. Ela disse-lhe para ir abrir o estábulo com uma chave e prender o cavalo e o leão com um cabelo fino que lhe entregou. O rapaz obedeceu. Depois foi pedir de comer, e a velha disse: "Primeiro vamos lutar."

"Ah, my son, that is the Tower of Ill Luck. Whoever goes there never comes back." The young man replied arrogantly: "I will go in and come back, and will still find you here when I return." He arrived at the tower — which from inside looked like an inn — and asked the old woman at the door for lodgings. She told him to go and open the stable with a key and tie up the horse and the lion with a thin hair she handed him. The young man obeyed. Then he went to ask for food, and the old woman said: "First let us wrestle."

O rapaz não tinha outra escolha senão aceitar. Mas enquanto lutava com a velha — que era uma feiticeira de força sobre-humana —, chamou pelo cavalo e pelo leão: "Vinde em meu auxílio!" A feiticeira gritou: "Engrossai, cabelo fino, em forte corrente, prendei o cavalo e o leão!" O cabelo transformou-se numa corrente de ferro e os animais ficaram imobilizados. A feiticeira matou o rapaz e enterrou-o num cemitério escondido onde já jaziam muitos outros corpos.

The young man had no choice but to accept. But as he wrestled with the old woman — who was a witch of superhuman strength — he called for his horse and lion: "Come to my aid!" The sorceress shouted: "Thicken, thin hair, into a strong chain, bind the horse and the lion!" The hair transformed into an iron chain and the animals were immobilised. The sorceress killed the young man and buried him in a hidden graveyard where many other bodies already lay.

O mesmo destino aguardou o segundo irmão, que partiu à procura do primeiro e caiu na mesma armadilha. A lavadeira avisou-o tal como ao irmão, mas ele também não quis ouvir. Chegou à torre, prendeu o cavalo e o leão com o cabelo que a feiticeira lhe deu, pediu de comer, foi forçado a lutar, chamou pelos animais — em vão — e foi morto e sepultado ao lado do irmão.

The same fate awaited the second brother, who set off in search of the first and fell into the same trap. The washerwoman warned him just as she had warned his brother, but he too would not listen. He arrived at the tower, tied the horse and lion with the hair the sorceress gave him, asked for food, was forced to wrestle, called for the animals — in vain — and was killed and buried beside his brother.

O filho mais novo, ao ver que os irmãos não regressavam, pediu à mãe a bênção e partiu também. Encontrou a velha lavadeira e desta vez escutou com atenção toda a sua história. Perguntou pela torre e foi avisado. "Já passaram dois rapazes que disseram o mesmo que tu, e nenhum voltou," disse a velha. "Esses eram os meus irmãos," respondeu o rapaz. "Irei lá e trá-los-ei de volta."

The youngest son, seeing that his brothers did not return, asked his mother for her blessing and also set off. He found the old washerwoman and this time listened attentively to her whole story. He asked about the tower and was warned. "Two young men have already passed who said the same as you, and neither returned," said the old woman. "Those were my brothers," replied the young man. "I will go there and bring them back."

Chegou à torre e a feiticeira repetiu o mesmo ritual: a chave do estábulo, o cabelo fino para prender os animais. Mas o rapaz, que tinha trazido consigo uma tesoura, entrou no estábulo e cortou o cabelo em pedaços miúdos, atirando-os depois ao mar. Não prendeu o cavalo nem o leão. Voltou a pedir de comer. A velha disse: "Primeiro vamos lutar." O rapaz gritou: "Vinde em meu auxílio, cavalo e leão!" A feiticeira ordenou ao cabelo que se transformasse em corrente — mas o cabelo estava no fundo do mar.

He arrived at the tower and the sorceress repeated the same ritual: the stable key, the thin hair to bind the animals. But the young man, who had brought scissors with him, entered the stable and cut the hair into tiny pieces, then threw them into the sea. He did not tie up the horse or the lion. He went back to ask for food. The old woman said: "First let us wrestle." The young man shouted: "Come to my aid, horse and lion!" The sorceress ordered the hair to transform into a chain — but the hair was at the bottom of the sea.

O cavalo e o leão responderam ao chamamento e chegaram de imediato. O rapaz disse à feiticeira: "Traz-me os meus irmãos ou morres!" A velha negou saber o paradeiro deles, mas o rapaz ameaçou matá-la, e ela não teve outra alternativa senão confessar onde os tinha enterrado. Entregou-lhe um unguento e um frasco de perfume para os ressuscitar. O rapaz foi ao cemitério, ungiu os corpos dos irmãos e pôs o frasco a cheirar-lhes ao nariz. Os dois acordaram como se nada tivesse acontecido.

The horse and lion responded to the call and arrived immediately. The young man said to the sorceress: "Bring me my brothers or you will die!" The old woman denied knowing where they were, but the young man threatened to kill her, and she had no choice but to confess where she had buried them. She handed him an ointment and a flask of perfume to bring them back to life. The young man went to the graveyard, anointed the brothers' bodies and held the flask to their noses. The two woke as if nothing had happened.

Quando os três irmãos se encontraram, foram juntos à feiticeira. Cavaram uma cova e enterraram-na viva — o mesmo fim que ela tinha dado a tantos outros. Depois partiram juntos pelo caminho, e ao passarem pelo ribeiro encontraram a velha lavadeira ainda a lavar roupa. "Vês?" disse o mais novo com um sorriso. "Disse-te que voltaria." E os três irmãos regressaram a casa, onde a mãe os esperava com os olhos cheios de lágrimas de alegria.

When the three brothers were reunited, they went together to the sorceress. They dug a pit and buried her alive in it — the same end she had given so many others. Then they set off together along the road, and as they passed the stream they found the old washerwoman still washing clothes. "You see?" said the youngest with a smile. "I told you I would return." And the three brothers went home, where their mother awaited them with eyes full of tears of joy.
