As Sete Sapatilhas de Ferro

Era uma vez um rei, uma rainha e uma princesa que era filha de ambos. Todas as noites a princesa gastava sete pares de sapatilhas de ferro, e o rei, por mais que tentasse descobrir como isso era possível, não conseguia perceber. Por fim, o rei fez publicar um decreto: quem conseguisse descobrir como a princesa gastava sete pares de sapatilhas de ferro numa só noite, entre a manhã e a tarde, receberia a sua mão em casamento — se fosse homem. Se fosse mulher, o rei casá-la-ia com um príncipe.

Once there was a king, a queen and a princess who was their daughter. Every night the princess wore out seven pairs of iron slippers, and the king, try as he might to find out how this was possible, could not understand it. Eventually the king had a decree published: whoever could discover how the princess wore out seven pairs of iron slippers in a single night, between morning and evening, would receive her hand in marriage — if a man. If a woman, the king would have her married to a prince.

Um soldado caminhava por uma estrada com um saco de laranjas às costas quando encontrou dois homens a lutar. Perguntou-lhes por que se batiam e eles responderam que o pai havia morrido e deixado um barrete, e os dois queriam ficar com ele. O soldado perguntou que graça tinha um barrete velho. Eles disseram que esse barrete era encantado: quem o pusesse na cabeça e dissesse "barrete, cobre-me para que ninguém me veja", ficava invisível. O soldado ofereceu-se para guardar o barrete enquanto atirava uma laranja ao longe para eles correrem atrás. Mal os homens partiram a correr, o soldado pôs o barrete, desapareceu e seguiu o seu caminho.

A soldier was walking along a road with a sack of oranges on his back when he came upon two men fighting. He asked why they were hitting each other and they replied that their father had died and left a cap, and both wanted to keep it. The soldier asked what use an old cap was. They said this cap was enchanted: whoever put it on his head and said "cap, cover me so no one can see me" became invisible. The soldier offered to hold the cap while he threw an orange far away for them to run after. The moment the men ran off, the soldier put on the cap, disappeared and went on his way.

Mais adiante encontrou outros dois homens a lutar por umas botas que o pai lhes deixara. Estas botas eram encantadas: quem as calçasse e dissesse "botas, levai-me a tal lugar" era transportado de imediato para onde quisesse. Com o mesmo truque da laranja, o soldado ficou também com as botas e desapareceu a tempo. Chegou à capital e ouviu o pregão do decreto real. Pensou: "Com este barrete e estas botas, hei de descobrir o que a princesa faz para gastar sete pares de sapatilhas de ferro numa noite." Apresentou-se ao palácio.

Further on he came upon two other men fighting over a pair of boots their father had left them. These boots were enchanted: whoever put them on and said "boots, take me to such a place" was transported there at once to wherever they wished. With the same orange trick, the soldier took the boots too and disappeared in time. He arrived at the capital and heard the crier reading the royal decree. He thought: "With this cap and these boots, I shall find out what the princess does to wear out seven pairs of iron slippers in one night." He presented himself at the palace.

O rei recebeu-o e perguntou-lhe se realmente sabia como descobrir o segredo da princesa. O soldado pediu apenas que lhe deixassem tentar. O rei avisou-o de que, se ao fim de três dias não tivesse descoberto o mistério, seria condenado à morte. O soldado aceitou as condições. Foi instalado no palácio, comia à mesa com o rei e dormia no quarto da princesa. Mas a princesa, nessa primeira noite, trouxe-lhe uma bebida que era um sonífero, e o soldado dormiu toda a noite sem ver nada.

The king received him and asked whether he really knew how to discover the princess's secret. The soldier only asked to be allowed to try. The king warned him that if after three days he had not discovered the mystery, he would be condemned to death. The soldier accepted the terms. He was installed in the palace, ate at the king's table and slept in the princess's chamber. But the princess, on that first night, brought him a drink that was a sleeping draught, and the soldier slept the whole night without seeing anything.

Na manhã seguinte o rei perguntou-lhe se havia visto alguma coisa. O soldado respondeu que não vira nada. O rei avisou-o: "Só restam dois dias, depois morres." O soldado respondeu com calma que não tinha receios. Na segunda noite repetiu-se o mesmo: dormiu profundamente graças ao sonífero. Mas na manhã seguinte o soldado ficou a pensar: era muito estranho adormecer todas as noites assim. Só podia ser a bebida que a princesa lhe dava. Na terceira noite, quando a princesa lhe trouxe a bebida, ele fingia beber mas deitou-a fora e fechou os olhos como se dormisse.

The following morning the king asked whether he had seen anything. The soldier replied he had seen nothing. The king warned him: "Only two days left, then you die." The soldier replied calmly that he had no misgivings. On the second night the same thing happened: he slept deeply thanks to the sleeping draught. But the following morning the soldier began to think: it was very strange to fall asleep like that every night. It could only be the drink the princess gave him. On the third night, when the princess brought him the drink, he pretended to drink it but threw it away and closed his eyes as if sleeping.

A meio da noite viu a princesa levantar-se, preparar-se e dirigir-se à porta. O soldado pôs o barrete e as botas e disse: "Barrete, torna-me invisível; botas, levai-me para onde a princesa for." A princesa entrou numa carruagem e o soldado seguiu-a. A carruagem parou à beira do mar e a princesa embarcou num navio com bandeiras. O soldado embarcou com ela, invisível. Chegaram a uma terra de gigantes. Ao passar pela primeira sentinela, ela perguntou: "Quem vai lá?" "A Princesa da Harmonia," respondeu a princesa. "Passe com a sua suite," disse a sentinela. A princesa olhou para trás, não viu ninguém e estranhou. O mesmo aconteceu com a segunda e a terceira sentinela.

In the middle of the night he saw the princess get up, prepare herself and head for the door. The soldier put on the cap and boots and said: "Cap, make me invisible; boots, take me wherever the princess goes." The princess got into a carriage and the soldier followed her. The carriage stopped at the seashore and the princess boarded a flag-decked ship. The soldier boarded with her, invisible. They reached a land of giants. Passing the first sentinel, she asked: "Who goes there?" "The Princess of Harmony," replied the princess. "Pass with your suite," said the sentinel. The princess looked back, saw no one and was puzzled. The same happened with the second and third sentinels.

Chegaram a um palácio magnífico onde havia uma sala de baile cheia de gigantes. A princesa sentou-se ao lado do seu amado, que era um gigante. O soldado escondeu-se debaixo do assento deles. A música tocou, a princesa levantou-se a dançar com o gigante, e quando acabou o primeiro baile as sapatilhas de ferro estavam em pedaços. Ela tirou-as e deixou-as debaixo do assento. O soldado apanhou-as e guardou-as no seu saco. Assim aconteceu sete vezes, e em cada dança um par de sapatilhas ficava destruído. O soldado guardou todos os sete pares.

They arrived at a magnificent palace where there was a ballroom full of giants. The princess sat beside her beloved, who was a giant. The soldier hid himself under their seat. The music played, the princess rose to dance with the giant, and when the first dance ended the iron slippers were in pieces. She took them off and left them under the seat. The soldier picked them up and put them in his sack. This happened seven times, and in each dance a pair of slippers was destroyed. The soldier kept all seven pairs.

Depois do baile, enquanto a princesa conversava com o gigante, o soldado virou as cadeiras deles de cabeça para baixo, deitando-os ao chão. Os gigantes ficaram espantados e procuraram por toda a parte, mas não encontraram ninguém. Chamaram o livro dos fados e um criado negro para o ler. O soldado aproximou-se, deu uma bofetada ao criado, tomou o livro e guardou-o. Quando chegou a hora da princesa regressar, ela foi embora e o soldado seguiu-a. Chegados à cidade, o soldado disse: "Botas, levai-me ao palácio," chegou antes dela, tirou as roupas e deitou-se a fingir que dormia.

After the ball, while the princess conversed with the giant, the soldier turned their chairs upside down, throwing them to the floor. The giants were astonished and searched everywhere but found no one. They summoned the book of fates and a black servant to read it. The soldier approached, slapped the servant, took the book and kept it. When the time came for the princess to return, she left and the soldier followed her. Arriving at the city, the soldier said: "Boots, take me to the palace," arrived before her, took off his clothes and lay down pretending to sleep.

Na manhã seguinte o rei perguntou-lhe pela última vez se havia visto alguma coisa. O soldado respondeu que não, mas que aceitava a morte com paciência. A princesa ficou radiante. O rei mandou preparar a execução. Quando o soldado se encaminhava para ela, pediu ao rei uma última graça: que mandasse chamar a princesa para estar presente. O rei concedeu. Então o soldado foi fazendo perguntas à princesa, que negou tudo, até que ele lhe mostrou as sete sapatilhas de ferro e por fim o livro dos fados. A princesa confessou. O rei ficou jubiloso e o soldado casou com a princesa, revelando que usara um barrete invisível e umas botas mágicas para desvendar o mistério.

The following morning the king asked him one last time whether he had seen anything. The soldier replied he had not, but that he accepted death with patience. The princess was overjoyed. The king had the execution prepared. As the soldier was making his way to it, he asked the king one last favour: to have the princess summoned to be present. The king granted it. The soldier then began asking the princess questions, which she denied, until he showed her the seven pairs of iron slippers and finally the book of fates. The princess confessed. The king was jubilant and the soldier married the princess, revealing that he had used an invisible cap and magic boots to unravel the mystery.
