Full Story — Portuguese with English Translation
As duas primeiras pediram chapéus, vestidos e xailes.
Once there was a man who had three daughters. He loved them all, but there was one to whom he dedicated his whole heart. Before leaving for the fair, he asked each one what she wished him to bring back. The first two asked for hats, dresses and shawls. The third, the one he loved most, said only that she wished her father to return in good health. The father insisted she ask for something material, and she, to please him, asked for a slice of green meadow with field herbs — something that existed nowhere.
Uma voz invisível disse-lhe: "Come e descansa.
On the return journey, already night, the father spotted a light in the distance. It was a shepherd's hut. Further on stood an illuminated palace that seemed uninhabited. The shepherd warned him that whoever entered never returned, but the man went in all the same. He found a set table and a prepared bed. An invisible voice told him: "Eat and rest. Tomorrow you will find on the table what your daughter asked for. But after three days you must bring her here."
The father returned home with the meadow slice and told his daughter what had happened. She did not hesitate: "Do not distress yourself, father. I will go." After three days, the father took her to the enchanted palace. Everything was illuminated and the table set for two. A voice spoke with her every day, but never showed form or face. As the days passed, the maiden grew accustomed to that invisible presence, and the voice became dear to her.
A voz disse-lhe: "Ouves o pássaro cantar? A tua irmã mais velha vai casar. Queres estar presente?" A donzela ficou radiante.
One day a bird sang in the garden with a joyful melody. The voice said: "Do you hear the bird sing? Your eldest sister is going to be married. Would you like to be there?" The maiden was overjoyed. The voice let her go, but warned her: "After three days a white horse will come for you. If at the third knock you are not mounted, the horse will leave without you." It also gave her a ring so she would not forget. The maiden went, the celebration was great, and after three days the white horse knocked at the door.
The maiden returned to the palace. But time passed, and the bird sang again — this time in mournful, sombre tones. The voice said: "Your father is dying and does not wish to die without saying farewell to you." The maiden begged to be allowed to go. "You will go," said the voice, "but this time you will not return. Your sisters will not let you come back." Even so, the maiden departed. The father managed to see her and, shortly after, passed away.
The sisters, envious of their youngest sister's wealth, gave her a sleeping draught and took from her the ring the Beast had given her. When the white horse knocked at the door the first time, the second time and the third time, the maiden slept in a deep slumber and the horse left without her. Without the ring, she forgot everything — the palace, the voice, the promise — and lived happily among her sisters, not knowing what she had lost.
After some time, the sisters, seeing their youngest sister's fortune diminishing little by little, said to her: "Sister, do you remember the white horse?" On hearing those words, the maiden remembered everything and burst into tears. "What misfortune is mine! What have you done?" The sisters returned the ring to her, and she ran to the enchanted palace. But she found it closed, dark and silent. She entered the garden and there found an enormous Beast lying prostrate on the ground.
The Beast had barely seen her when it cried out with a voice that seemed to come from the depths of the earth: "Away from me, tyrant! You have broken my spell! Now you will be the most unhappy girl in the world, you and your sisters." And, having said this, the Beast died. The maiden returned to her sisters in profound despair, not eating or drinking, consumed by remorse. After a few days, she died too. And the sisters, who had been the cause of everything, grew ever poorer and more miserable until the end of their days.
