Once there was a king who had a son passionately fond of hunting. One day, as he was crossing some open fields, the prince came upon an old woman in great distress, nearly dead with hunger. The prince carried no money with him, but had food he had brought for himself. He called his servants and ordered them to serve the old woman everything he had brought for his own use.

The old woman ate and drank until satisfied. She then thanked the prince warmly and said she had no way to reward him, as she possessed nothing. "But here are three citrons which I give you as a token of gratitude," she said. And she urged him insistently never to open them except beside a spring, and when he did so to cut them lengthways and not across. The prince kept the citrons, took his leave of the old woman, and continued his journey.

After walking for some time, the prince grew curious and opened one of the citrons, but forgot he needed to be beside a spring. At that very instant a most beautiful maiden emerged and said to him: "Give me water to drink or I shall die." As there was no water nearby, the poor girl died. The prince was very sad, but since he still had two citrons he consoled himself and continued on his way. Further along he opened the second, but again forgot the spring, and another most beautiful maiden appeared and died in the same way.

Now the prince was very afraid to open the third citron, fearing the same would happen. Yet his curiosity was so great he went in search of a spring. Upon finding one, he opened the third citron with great care. Out stepped a maiden even more beautiful than the others, who also said: "Give me water to drink or I shall die." The prince ran to fill a shell at the spring and gave it to her to drink. The maiden drank with relief and colour returned to her cheeks.

However, the maiden was very delicate and frail, and the prince still had a long way to go to the palace. Afraid the journey would be too much for her, he had her climb a tree that stood nearby while he went to fetch a carriage. The maiden did as she was asked and the prince departed. Shortly after, a very ugly serving woman arrived at the tree, come to draw water for her master. She looked into the clear water of the spring and saw the reflection of the maiden's face.

Voltou a olhar e tornou a bater.

The maid thought it was her own reflection and exclaimed: "Little dark beauty, what are you doing coming to fetch water? Break, break the jug!" She struck the copper jug against the ground, but copper would not break. She looked again and struck again. The maiden in the tree could barely contain her laughter, but feared to make noise. At last she could hold it no longer and laughed out loud. The maid looked in every direction until she saw the maiden in the tree. She approached with sweet words and asked her to come down so she could clean her hair.

The maid, who was in truth a sorceress, kept insisting until the maiden climbed down from the tree. As soon as she had her close, she pretended to comb her hair while asking her questions about the prince. When she had learned everything she wished to know, she drew out a large pin and drove it into the maiden's head. At that instant, the young woman turned into a dove and flew away. The sorceress climbed the tree and waited for the prince.

The prince returned with the carriage and was greatly astonished to find an ugly servant woman instead of the lovely maiden he had left. The maid began to weep and said she was the victim of a spell that made her beautiful one moment and hideous the next. The prince, moved by compassion, took her to the palace. The next day, walking in the garden, he saw a dove approach the gardener and say: "Gardener of my own garden, how does the prince live with his squinting, ugly dark woman?"

The gardener went and told the prince. They prepared snares of ribbon, of silver, and of gold, but the dove always escaped, laughing. Only when they prepared a snare of brilliants did the dove say: "Yes, this is the snare made for me!" and allowed herself to be caught. The sorceress, seeing the dove captured, asked the prince to kill it to make broth. But the prince refused and began to tenderly caress the little dove. Running his hand over her head he found a pin buried there and pulled it out.

O príncipe mandou matar a traidora.

At that instant, the dove transformed into the lovely maiden the prince had found by the spring. The prince stood astonished at seeing her suddenly before him. The maiden told him everything the sorceress had done to her. The prince commanded the traitor to be put to death. From her bones they made steps beside the maiden's bed, and from her skin they made a drum. The prince married the maiden and they lived very happily.
