Era uma vez um rei que tinha uma filha muito amada. A princesa tinha o hábito de se pentear de manhã, pôr uma flor no cabelo e ir ao jardim. Mas todas as vezes que lá ia, ouvia uma voz que lhe perguntava: «Quando queres ter os teus trabalhos — quando fores nova ou quando fores velha?» Isto aconteceu várias vezes, e a princesa ficou tão curiosa que foi perguntar à sua dama de honor o que lhe parecia que devia responder.

Once there was a king who had a dearly loved daughter. The princess had the habit of combing her hair each morning, placing a flower in it, and going to the garden. But every time she went there, she heard a voice that asked her: "When do you want to have your troubles — when you are young or when you are old?" This happened several times, and the princess grew so curious that she went to ask her lady-in-waiting what she thought she should reply.

The lady-in-waiting said: "For my part, I would prefer to have my troubles when young; with old age I would gain more power." The following day, the princess went to the garden and when the voice repeated the question, she replied that she preferred to face her troubles when young rather than old. The voice then said: "Take leave here of everything that is yours." The princess said farewell to the palace, her father, her mother, and the servants. Then the voice carried her through the air.

A voz pousou-a em cima de um moinho de vento. O moleiro viu-a e achou que era ela quem lhe roubava a farinha, e começou a atirar-lhe pedras. No dia seguinte a voz voltou à mesma hora e levou-a para o rio onde as lavadeiras lavavam a roupa. As lavadeiras disseram umas às outras que era ela quem lhes roubava a roupa e atiraram-lhe pedras. No terceiro dia, a voz pousou-a à porta de um jardim, cujo hortelão a acusou de roubar a fruta. Em todos estes lugares a princesa sofreu humilhações e pedradas.

The voice set her down on top of a windmill. The miller saw her and thought she was the one stealing his flour, and began to throw stones at her. The next day the voice returned at the same hour and carried her to the river where washerwomen were washing clothes. The washerwomen told each other she was the one stealing their laundry and pelted her with stones. On the third day, the voice set her down at the gate of a garden, whose gardener accused her of stealing his fruit. In all these places the princess suffered humiliations and stonings.

On the fourth day, the voice carried her and set her down at the gate of a beautiful garden beside a palace. The voice asked the princess if she remembered the times when she used to go to the garden to pick flowers. She said she did not remember. Shortly after, the palace cook looked out of the window and saw the young woman. Despite her being unrecognisable and badly mistreated, she seemed very beautiful to him. He went to tell the prince there was a very beautiful girl in the garden. The prince sent for her, but she said she would not come in as she was waiting for the voice to return for her.

O príncipe mandou chamá-la de novo, dizendo que ela o reconheceria. A princesa lembrou-se então de um amante que tinha tido, e disse: «Talvez seja ele.» Levantou-se e entrou no palácio. The prince sent for her again, saying she would recognise him. The princess then remembered a lover she had once had, and said: "Perhaps it is he." She rose and entered the palace. When the prince saw her he said: "Do you not recall that one day you said to me 'may you vanish like the wind'? It was so that you might know the troubles I went through that you now went through the same. But I was fortunate because I became enchanted. It was not I in person — it was my voice that spoke to you in the garden." The princess admitted she had always known it was enchantment.

O príncipe perguntou-lhe se queria voltar a casa do pai. Ela disse que não, que ficaria com ele. «Mas ouve», disse o príncipe, «não me casarei antes de vinte anos, porque se casar antes disso quebrarei o meu encantamento.» «Esperarei por ti mesmo que sejam trinta», respondeu a princesa. O príncipe deu-lhe um alfinete mágico: «Não o percas nem dês a ninguém, pois quebrarias o meu feitiço.» Depois disse-lhe que o pai dela estava em apuros e que passados dois dias deveriam ir visitá-lo, mas que ela só deveria ficar dois dias.

The prince asked if she wished to return to her father's house. She said no, she would stay with him. "But listen," said the prince, "I shall not marry before twenty years, because if I marry before then I will break my own enchantment." "I shall wait even if it takes thirty," replied the princess. The prince gave her a magic pin: "Do not lose it or give it to anyone, for you would break my spell." He then told her that her father was in trouble and that in two days they should go visit him, but she should only stay two days.

Chegado o dia, foram pelo ar até ao palácio do pai. O príncipe pousou-a no mesmo lugar de onde a tinha levado e avisou-a: «Lembra-te que só podes ficar dois dias.» Ao subir as escadas do palácio, a princesa bateu à porta e perguntou se precisavam de uma criada para vestir a rainha. O rei, muito fraco, julgou ouvir a voz da filha e ao levantar-se caiu e bateu com a cabeça. A princesa, desesperada, chamou pelo alfinete: «Ó alfinete, ajuda-me aqui!» A voz do príncipe apareceu imediatamente e ao saber o que acontecera disse-lhe que era melhor partir. Vieram pelo ar, e pouco depois chegou a notícia de que o pai tinha morrido.

When the day came, they flew through the air to her father's palace. The prince set her down in the same spot from which he had taken her and warned: "Remember you may only stay two days." Climbing the palace stairs, the princess knocked at the door and asked if they needed a maid to dress the queen. The king, very weak, thought he heard his daughter's voice and on rising fell and struck his head. The princess, desperate, called upon the pin: "Oh pin, help me here!" The prince's voice appeared at once and on hearing what had happened told her it was best to leave. They came back through the air, and shortly after news arrived that her father had died.

Chegados os vinte anos de espera, o príncipe disse-lhe: «Amanhã será o dia do nosso casamento.» Convidaram todos os reis, e o pai da princesa também foi convidado e veio. When the twenty years of waiting were fulfilled, the prince said to her: "Tomorrow will be the day of our wedding." They invited all the kings, and the princess's father was also invited and came. On seeing his daughter, the father grew angry and accused her of ingratitude. The princess explained she had left so as not to break the spell. The father, irritated, gave her a walnut: "Here is this walnut. Do not crack it open before you are with your husband." The princess replied she would neither crack it open nor eat it. The father went away annoyed.

After the wedding, the prince had a new palace built in another place. During the move, the princess, who was carrying the walnut in her hands, let it fall. At that instant the palace they were in caught fire and everything burned. The princess went and told the prince everything, who said: "Do you now see for yourself how your father wished to harm us?" The princess was with child, and the prince said her father had wanted to kill the child who was on the way.

Com o tempo, a princesa deu à luz um menino muito bonito. Um dia, quando a criança já era maior, encontraram no caminho um criado do pai da princesa. «Onde vais?» perguntou a princesa. «Venho matar a criança», respondeu o criado. O príncipe perguntou quem o enviara e o criado confessou que era o pai da princesa. A princesa pediu-lhe que não matasse a criança e que ficasse ao serviço deles. Ao atravessarem os rios no regresso, a princesa viu o primeiro cheio de leite, o seguinte coberto de névoa e o terceiro cheio de sangue. Quando perguntou o que significava, o criado respondeu: «É o sangue da criança que vês.» O príncipe ouviu e disse: «Então será o teu!» Apontou e disparou, matando o criado. Depois voltou-se para a princesa e disse: «Fui à caça e fiz boa caçada: em vez de matar passarinhos matei uma ave de rapina.» E viveram em paz e alegria por muitos anos.

In time, the princess gave birth to a very handsome boy. One day, when the child was older, they met on the road a servant of the princess's father. "Where are you going?" asked the princess. "I have come to kill the child," replied the servant. The prince asked who had sent him and the servant confessed it was the princess's father. The princess asked him not to kill the child and to enter their service instead. As they crossed rivers on the way home, the princess saw the first full of milk, the next covered with mist, and the third full of blood. When she asked what it meant, the servant replied: "It is the blood of the child you see." The prince heard and said: "Then it shall be yours!" He took aim and fired, killing the servant. Then he turned to the princess and said: "I went hunting and made a good bag: instead of killing little birds I killed a bird of prey." And they lived in peace and joy for many years.
