Era uma vez um rei e uma rainha. Poucos anos depois do casamento, a rainha adoeceu e morreu. No leito de morte, deixou um anel sobre a mesa e disse ao rei para casar com quem aquele anel servisse. Ora aconteceu que a princesa, filha de ambos, se aproximou da mesa por acaso, viu o anel e experimentou-o. Ajustava-lhe na perfeição. Correu a dizer ao pai. O rei respondeu, perturbado: "Minha filha, terás de casar comigo, porque a tua mãe expressou o desejo de que eu casasse com quem este anel servisse."

Once there was a king and a queen. A few years after their marriage, the queen fell ill and died. On her deathbed, she left a ring on a table and told the king to marry whoever that ring fitted. It so happened that the princess, their daughter, approached the table by chance, saw the ring and tried it on. It fitted her perfectly. She ran to tell her father. The king replied, troubled: "My daughter, you will have to marry me, because your mother expressed the wish that I should marry whoever this ring fitted."

The princess, terrified by that idea, shut herself in the room whose windows looked onto the garden and began to weep. But soon an old woman appeared at the window and asked her: "Why do you weep, royal lady?" The princess told her everything. The old woman said: "Listen to me, royal lady. Go and tell your father that you will only marry him when he brings you a dress the colour of the stars in the sky." And she disappeared. The princess went to the king and told him exactly that. The father went out and returned with the dress ready made. The princess shut herself away again, weeping.

The old woman reappeared and told her to ask her father for a dress the colour of wild flowers. The king had that dress made too and brought it to her. The princess wept again. The old woman reappeared a third time and told her to ask for a dress of many colours. The king had it made and gave it to her. The princess went back into her room in tears. "And now, what shall I do?" "Send for a carpenter and have him make you a wooden dress. Put inside it your jewels and everything you will need. Get inside it and flee to the palace of the king who lives yonder, who needs a maidservant to tend the ducks."

A princesa fez exactamente isso. Mandou fazer um vestido de madeira, meteu dentro as suas joias e os três vestidos magníficos, entrou para dentro dele e fugiu numa bela manhã. The princess did exactly that. She had a wooden dress made, put inside it her jewels and the three magnificent dresses, got inside it and fled one fine morning. She walked and walked until she reached the palace. She knocked at the door and asked the servants to go and tell the king whether he needed a maidservant to tend the ducks. The king said yes. He asked her name, and she replied that her name was Maria do Pau. And so her new life in disguise began.

As soon as she reached the duck field, the princess would take off the wooden dress, wash herself, comb her hair and put on the richest of her dresses — the one the colour of the stars. The king, walking in the garden, would spot a dazzling maiden in the field and hear her say: "Ducks here, ducks there, the daughter of a king tends the ducks, a thing never seen before!" Then she would kill a duck and get back into the wooden dress. In the evening she would come in and say: "O king, I have killed a duck." The king would ask in wonder who that maiden was so splendidly dressed. Maria do Pau replied that there had been no one there but herself in disguise.

The king was so intrigued that he forbade Maria do Pau from going to the field and told her there would be a feast for three days — but that she would not be going. Maria do Pau pleaded. The king refused and, on leaving, threw his boots at her. When she was alone, Maria do Pau took the wand the old woman — who was a fairy — had given her and asked for the best royal carriage. The carriage appeared. She put on the dress of the stars and appeared at the feast. The king, enchanted, ordered the guards not to let her leave, but she threw them a bag of coins and got out. When the king asked where she was from, she replied: "From the land of the boot."

On the second day of the feast, the king threw a towel at her before leaving. On the third day the king threw a walking stick at her. She put on the dress of many colours and appeared more dazzling than ever. The king could not follow her when she left and the guards told him she came from the land of the walking stick. The king returned to the palace wondering: boot, towel, walking stick — what could it mean?

Certo dia o rei espiou pelo buraco da fechadura do quarto de Maria do Pau e viu a mesma donzela deslumbrante de todos os dias da festa, sentada a bordar com o vestido das estrelas. Mandou fazer uma chave, abriu o quarto de surpresa e entrou. A princesa assustou-se e tentou fugir, mas o rei disse: "Não te perturbes. Casarás comigo. Mas primeiro quero que me contes a tua história e por que andas num vestido de madeira." A princesa contou-lhe tudo. O rei casou com ela e enviou chamar a velhinha que lhe tinha dado a varinha — mas a fada recusou ir, pois as fadas não habitam palácios. E viveram felizes para sempre.

One day the king looked through the keyhole of Maria do Pau's room and saw the same dazzling maiden from all the days of the feast, seated doing embroidery in the dress of the stars. He had a key made, opened the room by surprise and entered. The princess was startled and tried to flee, but the king said: "Do not be troubled. You will marry me. But first I want you to tell me your story and why you go about in a wooden dress." The princess told him everything. The king married her and sent for the old woman who had given her the wand — but the fairy refused to come, for fairies do not inhabit palaces. And they lived happily ever after.
