Once there was a witch who had a daughter called Guiomar. The young woman had fallen in love with a prince, but her mother did not want her to marry him. Guiomar told the prince to disguise himself as a beggar and come asking for alms on a day when her mother was out. The prince did so, and Guiomar hid him behind the door, instructing him to say he was a poor man asking for shelter for the night.

When the witch returned home, she said at once: "I smell royal blood." "No, mother," replied Guiomar, "it is only a poor man asking for alms who wants shelter, as he has nowhere to stay." "Very well, let him stay," said the witch, "but tomorrow he must bring me a pot full of small birds' droppings." The prince was moved to tears, with no idea how to accomplish such a task. Guiomar told him not to worry: she knew what was to be done.

Guiomar told him to place an earthenware pot at the foot of a certain large wall she pointed out, and to return at night to collect it. The prince did so and at night found the pot full. He delivered it to the witch. When she saw it, she said: "Ah! Guiomar had a hand in this." But the prince denied it. The witch demanded again, this time that he plant several vines and bring her a basket full of grapes that night. The prince went to Guiomar, who told him the same: plant the vines and return at night, and he would find the clusters.

The prince planted the vines and at night found the clusters ripe. He gave the grapes to the witch, who again said: "Guiomar had a hand in this." But the prince continued to deny it. After this, the two lovers agreed to flee the following day when the witch went out. When they saw she had left, they prepared everything for their escape. Guiomar spat three times on the ground at the doorstep and they fled at a run.

When the witch returned and knocked at the door, one of the spits replied: "Who is there?" The witch told it to open. The second spit said: "Guiomar has fled." And the third added: "With a young man." The witch sent Guiomar's father to run after them. The father set off at a run, and Guiomar, who glanced back and saw him, said to the prince: "There comes my father. What shall we do?" The prince was terrified, but Guiomar said she would sort everything out.

"Let my lad be transformed into a public road and I into an old woman with a sack on her back." And so it was. The father arrived at the spot and, seeing only the old woman, asked if she had seen a girl with a young man on that road. The old woman replied only: "Selling nuts, buying garlic; buying garlic, selling nuts." The father, annoyed by the answer, turned back for home. The witch immediately understood what had happened and sent him back.

When the father returned, Guiomar transformed the prince into a hermitage and herself into a hermit. The father asked the hermit if he had seen a girl with a young man. The hermit replied only with the sound of the mass bell: "Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, the bell goes for mass, quick, for the priest is at the altar." The father, weary and irritated, returned home and told the witch. The witch realised it had been her daughter again, and this time decided to go herself.

Guiomar, who was almost at the end of the journey, looked back and panicked at seeing her mother running. "I escaped from my father, but I do not know how to free myself from my mother!" After a moment she said: "Let my lad be transformed into a river and I into an eel!" When the witch reached the riverbank, she recognised her daughter and called to her three times. The eel wagged her tail each time as a sign of refusal. Furious, the witch cast a curse: "When the prince reaches his palace, the first person who gives him a kiss will make him forget you."

Regressaram à forma original e continuaram a caminhar.

They returned to their original forms and continued walking. Guiomar told the prince: "Take care that no one gives you a kiss, for my mother's curses never fail." On arriving at the palace, the prince avoided being kissed by his mother and sisters. But he was very tired and fell asleep. One of his sisters, passing through his room, saw him sleeping and gave him a kiss. When the prince woke and Guiomar spoke to him, he did not recognise her. She understood that the curse had taken effect.

Guiomar went to live in a house facing the palace and every day dressed in her finest clothes and sat at the window. One by one, the three chamberlains went to speak with her, but she used her witchcraft to put each through embarrassing situations: the first could not light the tinder, the second poured water all over himself, the third was beaten by the slamming window. Intrigued, the prince himself went to speak with her. Climbing her stairs, he found the public road with the old woman and her sack, then the hermitage, then the river with the eel. Gradually his memories returned. He fell to his knees and begged Guiomar's forgiveness for his ingratitude. She undid the spell, they married, and lived happily ever after.
