O Gigante Encantado

Era uma vez uma viúva que tinha três filhos. Viviam na maior pobreza, e um dia o filho mais velho disse: «Ó mãe, as coisas não podem continuar assim. Já sou suficientemente velho para fazer algo pela vida. Vou percorrer outros países em busca de sustento.» A mãe não queria que ele fosse e pôs-se a chorar. Mas o filho insistiu tanto que um dia a mãe preparou o seu enxoval e ele partiu ao romper da aurora.

Once there was a widow who had three sons. They lived in great poverty, and one day the eldest son said: "Mother, things cannot go on like this. I am old enough now to do something to make a living. I shall travel to other countries to seek my livelihood." His mother did not want him to go and began to cry. But the son insisted so much that one day the mother prepared his kit and he set off at the break of dawn.

Viajou muito até chegar a certo país, onde perguntou se alguém precisava de criado. Disseram-lhe que havia ali um feiticeiro que precisava sempre de criados e que fosse bater à sua porta. O jovem foi e perguntou se precisavam de criado. «Chegaste a bom tempo», respondeu o feiticeiro, «e podes entrar ao meu serviço hoje mesmo. Ganharás uma moeda por dia, mas terás de me acompanhar onde quer que eu vá.» O jovem ficou contente com o salário e disse que estava pronto para ir com ele até aos confins do mundo.

He travelled far until he reached a certain country, where he asked if anyone needed a servant. He was told there was a sorcerer there who always needed servants and that he should knock at his door. The young man went and asked if a servant was needed. "You have come at an opportune time," replied the sorcerer, "and you may enter my service today. You shall earn one coin a day, but you must accompany me wherever I go." The young man was pleased with the pay and said he was ready to go with him to the very ends of the earth.

Encheram vários alforges de provisões e tudo o que poderiam precisar. Prepararam dois bons cavalos com arreios e partiram a meia-noite, percorrendo lugares lúgubres e caminhos escuros. O jovem, não habituado a viagens longas, ia ficando muito cansado e não fazia senão perguntar: «Ó senhor, ainda não chegámos?» Mas o feiticeiro respondia sempre: «Não te preocupes, há-de ser quando tiver de ser.» Assim viajaram toda a noite, e ao romper do dia avistaram uma montanha muito alta. «Vês aquela montanha? É lá que temos de ir», disse o feiticeiro.

They filled several saddlebags with provisions and everything they might need. They prepared two good horses with harnesses and set off at midnight, travelling through gloomy places and dark roads. The young man, unused to long journeys, was growing very tired and did nothing but ask: "Sir, have we not yet arrived?" But the sorcerer always replied: "Do not worry, we shall get there when we get there." They journeyed thus all night, and at the break of day they sighted a very high mountain. "Do you see that mountain? That is where we have to go," said the sorcerer.

Ao chegarem ao sopé da montanha, o feiticeiro disse ao jovem que desembarcasse e acrescentou: «Agora tens de atirar um tiro na barriga do teu cavalo.» O jovem, assustado, disse que de forma nenhuma faria isso. «Então serei eu a atirar em ti», respondeu o feiticeiro. Cheio de medo, o jovem atirou no cavalo. O feiticeiro tirou as tripas, encheu um saco com elas e mandou o jovem meter-se dentro da barriga vazia do cavalo, juntando também vários sacos. Depois abriu um livro e começou a ler, e o cavalo começou a subir a montanha sozinho.

On arriving at the foot of the mountain, the sorcerer told the young man to dismount and added: "Now you must fire a shot at your horse's belly." The young man, frightened, said he would do no such thing. "Then I shall fire at you instead," replied the sorcerer. Full of fear, the young man shot the horse. The sorcerer removed the entrails, filled a bag with them, and ordered the young man to climb inside the horse's empty belly, adding several bags as well. He then opened a book and began to read, and the horse began to ascend the mountain on its own.

Quando o cavalo chegou ao topo, o feiticeiro gritou lá de baixo: «O que vês?» «Vejo muito ouro, muita prata, muitos brilhantes, muitas pedras preciosas e muitos ossos», respondeu o jovem. «Muito bem, então enche todos os sacos com essas riquezas», disse o feiticeiro, «e manda o cavalo cá para baixo com eles, que eu mando o cavalo de volta para ti.» O jovem obedeceu, encheu os sacos, carregou o cavalo e mandou-o descer. Quando o feiticeiro recebeu o cavalo carregado, partiu com ele e abandonou o rapaz sozinho no cimo da montanha.

When the horse reached the top, the sorcerer shouted from below: "What do you see?" "I see much gold, much silver, many brilliants, many precious stones, and many bones," replied the young man. "Very well, then fill all the bags with those riches," said the sorcerer, "and send the horse down here with them, and I shall send the horse back for you." The young man obeyed, filled the bags, loaded the horse, and sent it down. When the sorcerer received the laden horse, he set off with it and abandoned the young man alone on top of the mountain.

O jovem, ao perceber que tinha sido abandonado, começou a chorar e a procurar ervas para comer, pois tinha muita fome. Depois de andar algum tempo, encontrou uma erva silvestre que crescia com muita força e tinha raízes muito fundas, que dificultavam muito a sua arrancada. Mas quando conseguiu arrancá-la, descobriu no buraco que ficou um enorme anel de ferro, muito espesso. Cheio de curiosidade, puxou-o. Quando o anel saiu completamente, viu umas escadas cobertas de moedas de ouro e muitas riquezas. Desceu as escadas e chegou a um palácio magnífico.

The young man, realising he had been abandoned, began to cry and to search for herbs to eat, as he was very hungry. After wandering for some time, he found a wild herb growing very vigorously with very deep roots that made it very difficult to pull up. But when he managed to pull it out, he discovered in the hole left behind an enormous iron ring, very thick. Full of curiosity, he pulled on it. When the ring was fully drawn out, he saw some steps covered in gold coins and many rich things. He descended the steps and arrived at a magnificent palace.

Viu uma mesa coberta com os mais deliciosos manjares e, como estava com muita fome, sentou-se imediatamente a comer. Depois levantou-se e foi a outro aposento. Ao entrar no quarto, viu um gigante deitado. Logo que se aproximou, o gigante exclamou: «Quem te autorizou a entrar aqui?» O jovem, aterrorizado, caiu de joelhos aos pés do gigante e implorou-lhe que o perdoasse. Contou-lhe tudo o que lhe tinha acontecido. «Pois bem», disse o gigante, quando o rapaz acabou de falar, «o teu amo é o causador do meu encantamento. Não tiveste a sorte de o matar, e enquanto ele viver, eu não poderei sair daqui.»

He saw a table covered with the most delicious viands and, as he was very hungry, sat down at once to eat. Then he rose and went to another chamber. On entering the room, he saw a giant lying down. The moment he drew near, the giant cried out: "Who authorised you to enter here?" The young man, terrified, fell to his knees at the giant's feet and begged his pardon. He recounted everything that had happened to him. "Very well," said the giant when the young man finished speaking, "your master is the cause of my enchantment. You did not have the luck to kill him, and as long as he lives I shall not be able to leave this place."

«Mas há ainda uma maneira de me salvar», continuou o gigante. «Amanhã, antes do nascer do sol, tens de te esconder atrás daquele tanque. Virão três pombas — uma branca, uma cinzenta e uma cor de canela. Se conseguires apanhar a branca, farás a tua felicidade e a minha.» O jovem, na excitação do momento, não dormiu nada e passou a noite escondido atrás do tanque. Quando o dia começou a raiar, as pombas apareceram, banharam-se no tanque, e quando o rapaz tentou apanhá-las, ficaram-lhe apenas duas penas nas mãos e as aves fugiram.

"But there is still one way to save me," the giant continued. "Tomorrow, before sunrise, you must hide behind that tank. Three doves will come — a white one, a grey one, and a cinnamon-coloured one. If you succeed in catching the white one, you will bring about your happiness and mine." The young man, in his excitement, never slept and spent the night concealed behind the tank. When day began to dawn, the doves appeared, bathed themselves in the tank, and when the young man tried to catch them, only two feathers remained in his hands and the birds flew away.

O jovem, muito triste, foi ao gigante e disse: «A prova de que fiz o meu melhor são estas duas penas que tenho na mão; mas prometo que amanhã não me escaparão.» Arranjou alguma fita e no dia seguinte preparou uma armadilha no tanque e escondeu-se a esperar. Mal amanheceu, as pombas voltaram, banharam-se, e quando a pomba branca ia a voar caiu na armadilha. O jovem, muito contente, foi apanhá-la; mas no mesmo instante a pomba transformou-se numa donzela encantadora. A donzela ficou muito envergonhada por se encontrar nas mãos do jovem. Ele levou-a ao gigante, que ficou muito satisfeito ao vê-la.

The young man, very sad, went to the giant and said: "The proof that I did my best are these two feathers in my hand; but I promise you they shall not escape me tomorrow." He procured some ribbon and the next day prepared a snare in the tank and hid himself to wait. As soon as day broke, the doves returned, bathed themselves, and when the white dove was about to fly away she fell into the snare. The young man, very pleased, went to take hold of her; but at that very instant the dove transformed into a lovely maiden. The maiden was very embarrassed to find herself in the young man's hands. He took her to the giant, who was very pleased to see her.

Os irmãos mais novos, ao verem que o primeiro não voltava, decidiram ir à sua procura. O mais novo, que era o mais esperto, foi ter ao mesmo país e ao mesmo feiticeiro. Fingiu não saber de nada, entrou ao serviço do feiticeiro e, quando chegaram ao sopé da montanha e o feiticeiro mandou que disparasse na barriga do cavalo, o rapaz percebeu logo que havia aí um ardil. Entrou na barriga do cavalo, subiu ao topo, mas em vez de encher os sacos de riquezas encheu-os de ossos. Quando o cavalo descia de volta com os sacos, o rapaz atirou uma grande pedra ao feiticeiro e partiu-lhe as pernas. O feiticeiro morreu. No mesmo instante, o gigante sentiu uma grande alegria. À medida que o feiticeiro ia morrendo, o palácio do gigante ia subindo e subindo. De manhã, quando o jovem acordou, olhou pela janela do seu quarto e viu a casa da mãe mesmo ao lado. A mãe abriu a porta e ficou espantada ao ver um palácio magnífico em frente. Os dois filhos estavam sãos e salvos. As outras duas pombas também se desencantaram e transformaram-se em belas donzelas, que casaram com os dois irmãos. O gigante, que afinal era um príncipe, também ficou desencantado e casou com a bela donzela que em forma de pomba branca rodeava o seu palácio. E todos viveram muito felizes e contentes.

The younger brothers, seeing the eldest did not return, decided to go in search of him. The youngest, who was the sharpest, went to the same country and the same sorcerer. He pretended to know nothing, entered the sorcerer's service, and when they arrived at the foot of the mountain and the sorcerer ordered him to shoot his horse in the belly, the young man immediately saw that there was trickery involved. He got inside the horse's belly, ascended to the top, but instead of filling the bags with riches he filled them with bones. As the horse descended with the bags, the young man threw a large stone at the sorcerer and broke his legs. The sorcerer died. At that instant, the giant felt a great joy. As the sorcerer's life ebbed away, the giant's palace rose higher and higher. In the morning, when the young man woke and looked from his chamber window, he saw his mother's house standing right beside them. The mother opened her door and was astonished to see a magnificent palace opposite. Both sons were safe and sound. The other two doves also broke their spell and transformed into beautiful maidens, who married the two brothers. The giant, who was in truth a prince, was also disenchanted and married the beautiful maiden who in the shape of a white dove had been flying around his palace. And they all lived very happily and contentedly.
