As Três Pedrinhas Azuis

Era uma vez um rei que se desaviera com a rainha porque não tinham filhos. A rainha, por isso, vivia em grande angústia e rezava a Deus para lhe dar pelo menos um filho. Em breve ficou grávida, e quando chegou a hora do parto um mendigo apareceu à porta do palácio a pedir esmola. A dama de companhia recusou dar-lhe qualquer coisa. O mendigo disse que sabia que ela recusava porque a rainha estava em trabalho de parto e ia dar à luz uma menina — mas que profetizava que aos quinze anos um pássaro gigante viria buscá-la no bico.

Once there was a king who had grown displeased with his queen because they had no children. The queen therefore lived in great anguish and prayed to God to give her at least a child. Soon she became pregnant, and when the time of her delivery came a beggar appeared at the palace gate asking for alms. The lady-in-waiting refused to give him anything. The beggar said he knew she refused because the queen was in labour and about to give birth to a girl — but he prophesied that at the age of fifteen a giant bird would come and take the girl away in its beak.

A dama de companhia entrou mas não contou nada. Todos os habitantes do palácio festejaram o nascimento da principezinha e afagaram-na. Só a dama de companhia chorava ao beijá-la, o que espantou toda a gente. Quando lhe perguntaram por que chorava, a princípio não quis dizer, mas por fim contou o que o mendigo lhe dissera. Toda a gente ficou muito preocupada. Com o passar dos anos, o passatempo preferido da princesa era brincar com uma mesa colocada no centro do jardim. Um dia, um príncipe veio visitar o rei e, ao ver a principezinha, encantou-se com ela e deu-lhe, ao partir, três pedrinhas azuis como lembrança.

The lady-in-waiting went inside but said nothing. All the palace inhabitants celebrated the birth of the little princess and fondled her. Only the lady-in-waiting wept when she kissed her, which astonished everyone. When asked why she wept, she at first refused to say, but eventually told what the beggar had said to her. Everyone became very worried. As the years passed, the princess's favourite pastime was to play with a table placed in the centre of the garden. One day, a prince came to visit the king and, upon seeing the little princess, was charmed by her and gave her, upon leaving, three little blue stones as a keepsake.

Quando a princesa chegou aos quinze anos, o período da profecia tinha chegado. Ela nunca saía de casa e não fazia nada a não ser brincar com as pedrinhas azuis sobre a mesa. Num dia em que o rei e a rainha foram viajar, a menina ficou sozinha aos cuidados da dama de companhia. Estava a brincar no jardim quando um pássaro enorme voou para junto dela e perguntou-lhe quando preferia cumprir o seu destino: na juventude ou na velhice. A dama de companhia aconselhou-a a dizer que preferia na juventude. O pássaro agarrou imediatamente a principezinha no bico e levou-a pelos ares, largando-a numa floresta densa e sombria.

When the princess turned fifteen, the time of the prophecy had arrived. She never went out and did nothing but play with the little blue stones on the table. On a day when the king and queen had gone travelling, the girl was left alone in the care of the lady-in-waiting. She was playing in the garden when an enormous bird flew close to her and asked her when she would prefer to fulfil her destiny: in youth or in old age. The lady-in-waiting advised her to say she preferred it in her youth. The bird immediately seized the little princess in its beak and flew away with her, leaving her in a dense and shadowy forest.

Depois de uma noite e de um dia na floresta, a princesa começou a chorar de fome e de frio. Por sorte, um príncipe de uma cidade próxima tinha o hábito de ir à caça naquela floresta uma vez por mês. Nesse mesmo dia, ao percorrê-la, ouviu soluços abafados. Chamou o seu camareiro e foram à procura até encontrarem a princesa. Encantado com ela, levou-a para o seu palácio e trancou-a num quarto sem que ninguém soubesse. Mas a rainha-mãe, desconfiada porque o filho passava muito tempo naquele quarto, aproveitou uma ausência dele para abrir a porta e encontrou a princesa lá dentro.

After a night and a day in the forest, the princess began to weep from hunger and cold. Fortunately, a prince from a nearby city had the habit of going hunting in that forest once a month. That very day, as he traversed it, he heard muffled sobbing. He called his chamberlain and they searched until they found the princess. Enchanted by her, he took her to his palace and locked her in a room without anyone knowing. But the queen-mother, suspicious because her son spent so much time in that room, took advantage of his absence to open the door and found the princess inside.

A rainha-mãe repreendeu muito o filho, mas ele pediu-lhe que não maltratasse a princesa. Nem a rainha nem a irmã do príncipe gostavam da princesa, mas ela continuou a viver no palácio. Com o tempo, a princesa ficou grávida e deu à luz um rapaz, precisamente quando o príncipe tinha de fazer uma viagem. A rainha-mãe tomou a criança, cortou-lhe um dedinhos, esfregou os lábios da princesa com o sangue, pôs a criança numa cesta e mandou-a lançar ao mar. Quando o príncipe voltou, a rainha disse-lhe que a princesa tinha comido o filho.

The queen-mother scolded her son greatly, but he begged her not to mistreat the princess. Neither the queen nor the prince's sister liked the princess, but she continued to live in the palace. In time, the princess became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, just as the prince had to go on a journey. The queen-mother took the child, cut off one of his little fingers, smeared the princess's lips with the blood, placed the child in a basket, and had it thrown into the sea. When the prince returned, the queen told him that the princess had eaten her son.

O príncipe foi ter com ela: "Então foste capaz de comer o teu próprio filho?" Ela respondeu apenas que pedia a Deus que a verdade viesse ao de cima. A mesma crueldade sucedeu uma segunda e uma terceira vez, sempre que a princesa dava à luz um rapazinho e o príncipe estava em viagem. Na terceira vez, o príncipe, cheio de raiva, mandou enterrá-la até à cintura num pátio pequeno que dava para a escadaria principal, e ordenou que quem passasse lhe batesse. A princesa suportou tudo em silêncio, pedindo sempre que Deus revelasse a verdade.

The prince went to her: "So you were capable of eating your own son?" She replied only that she prayed to God that the truth would come to light. The same cruelty occurred a second and a third time, whenever the princess gave birth to a baby boy and the prince was away on a journey. The third time, the prince, full of rage, ordered her to be buried up to the waist in a small courtyard leading to the main staircase, and commanded that all who passed should beat her. The princess endured everything in silence, always praying that God would reveal the truth.

Soube que o príncipe ia a uma feira que passava perto do palácio do seu pai. Pediu-lhe que lhe trouxesse uma faca e que fosse ao palácio do rei seu pai pedir as três pedrinhas azuis que ela tinha deixado na gaveta da mesa do jardim. O príncipe foi à feira e cumpriu o pedido. Chegou ao palácio do rei e inventou uma história dizendo que ouvira uma voz que lhe dissera para ir buscar três pedrinhas azuis numa gaveta de uma mesa no jardim. O rei percebeu logo que só podia ser a sua filha e ficou muito emocionado. Um criado aventurou-se pelo jardim, que se tornara uma selva cheia de serpentes, e trouxe as três pedrinhas.

She learned that the prince was going to a fair that passed near her father's palace. She asked him to bring her a knife and to stop at the king's palace to ask for the three little blue stones she had left in the drawer of the garden table. The prince went to the fair and fulfilled the request. He arrived at the king's palace and invented a story saying he had heard a voice telling him to go and fetch three little blue stones from a drawer in a garden table. The king immediately realised it could only be his daughter and was very moved. A servant ventured into the garden, which had become a wilderness full of serpents, and brought back the three stones.

O príncipe regressou e deu à princesa a faca e as três pedrinhas azuis, escondendo-se para ver o que ela faria. A princesa colocou as pedras diante de si e perguntou à primeira pedra se se lembrava do que a rainha-mãe fizera ao primeiro filho. As pedrinhas soaram "tlin tin tin" e disseram que era verdade. Perguntou à segunda e à terceira, e cada vez as pedrinhas confirmavam a história com o mesmo som. Quando acabou de interrogar as três pedrinhas, pegou na faca e disse: "Agora vou cortar-me a cabeça para acabar com os meus sofrimentos." O príncipe, ao ouvi-la, correu a impedi-la.

The prince returned and gave the princess the knife and the three little blue stones, hiding himself to see what she would do. The princess placed the stones before her and asked the first stone whether it remembered what the queen-mother had done to her first child. The stones rang out "tlin tin tin" and said it was true. She asked the second and the third, and each time the stones confirmed the story with the same sound. When she had finished questioning the three stones, she picked up the knife and said: "Now I shall cut off my head to end my sufferings." The prince, upon hearing her, ran to stop her.

O príncipe tirou-a da vala onde estava enterrada e levou-a para os seus aposentos. Chamou o criado que lançara as crianças ao mar e este confessou a verdade. O príncipe mandou pôr o criado em prisão, encerrou a rainha-mãe e a irmã numa torre, e quando a princesa se recuperou dos maus-tratos montaram a cavalo e foram ao palácio do pai dela. O rei e a rainha não cabiam em si de alegria ao ver a filha de novo. Houve grandes festas, e ao fim de quinze dias o príncipe casou com a princesa. Como o rei não tinha outro filho, pediu-lhes que ficassem no palácio, onde viveram muito felizes para sempre.

The prince lifted her out of the pit where she was buried and took her to his chambers. He summoned the servant who had thrown the children into the sea, and the man confessed the truth. The prince had the servant imprisoned, shut the queen-mother and his sister in a tower, and when the princess had recovered from her mistreatment they mounted horses and rode to her father's palace. The king and queen could not contain their joy at seeing their daughter again. There were great celebrations, and at the end of a fortnight the prince married the princess. Since the king had no other child, he asked them to remain in the palace, where they all lived very happily ever after.
