A Aranha

Era uma vez um rapaz cujos pais queriam que ele aprendesse um ofício. Ele não tinha vontade nenhuma, mas como insistiram muito, acabou por aprender a ser sapateiro. Contudo, mal o pai morreu, largou o trabalho e deixou de fazer sapatos. A mãe ficou muito zangada com ele e expulsou-o de casa. O rapaz disse-lhe que havia de voltar um dia homem rico e que tencionava casar com a primeira mulher que encontrasse no caminho. Pegou num cesto com as suas ferramentas de sapateiro e partiu.

Once there was a boy whose parents wanted him to learn a trade. He had no desire to do so, but as they insisted, he ended up learning shoemaking. However, as soon as his father died, he abandoned the work and stopped making shoes. His mother was very angry with him and threw him out of the house. The boy told her he would return one day a rich man and that he intended to marry the first woman he met along the way. He took a basket with his shoemaker's tools and set off.

He walked many leagues through forests and overgrown paths. At a certain point, he found a large square stone and sat on it to rest and eat a loaf he had in his basket. From beneath the stone emerged a large spider, and no sooner had the boy spotted it than he said: "You shall be my wife." The spider, upon hearing this, climbed into the basket. The boy made a hole in the bread and placed the spider inside. He resumed his walk and in the distance spotted an old abandoned house.

He entered the house, set his basket on the floor, and the spider crawled out and climbed up the walls to the ceiling, where it began to spin a web. Since there were no shoemakers in that village, they welcomed him with open arms and gave him plenty of work. The young man's fortune grew rapidly.

The servant obeyed, and when the boy returned home he found the house swept and a delicious dinner waiting for him.

Very pleased, the boy turned to the spider and said: "See what a fine choice I made in my wife!" The spider, from the ceiling, tossed down to the floor all manner of richly embroidered fabrics she had worked to beautify the house. They lived this way for a full year, and the young man grew so wealthy that he no longer needed to work: clothes, food, and everything necessary simply appeared without his knowing how.

The spider came down from the ceiling, went to the henhouse — where only a rooster remained — and entered inside it. Thus the rooster walked along behind the two riders. When they reached the forest and sat on the same square stone, they heard the rooster crow:

"Qui quiri qui, / Qui quiri quioh! / Aqui está o rei, / E eu sou a rainha oh!" Nesse instante a pedra partiu-se em duas metades e transformou-se num palácio esplêndido. A aranha saiu de dentro do galo e transformou-se numa princesa encantadora. Casou com o rapaz, que se tornou rei, e ela rainha. Mandaram buscar a mãe do jovem, e a criada ficou ao serviço do palácio como dama de companhia.

"Ki kiri ki, / Ki kiri kioh! / Here is the king, / And I am the queen oh!" At that instant the stone split in two and was transformed into a splendid palace. The spider emerged from the rooster and transformed into a beautiful princess. She married the boy, who became king, and she became queen. They sent for the boy's mother, and the servant girl remained in the palace's service as a lady-in-waiting.

Later, when the young king told his mother the whole story — the spider found beneath the stone, the bread with the hole, the year of life in the old house, the embroideries and dinners that appeared by magic — his mother did not know whether to laugh or cry in amazement. She had driven out her son as a vagabond and he had returned as a king. From that day on, they all lived together in the palace with great joy and prosperity.
