A Donzela Encantada

Era uma vez um homem que tinha três filhas. No reino onde vivia, havia o costume de pendurar à porta uma bola de ouro quando se queria arranjar marido para uma rapariga solteira. A filha mais velha casou com um príncipe, e assim também a segunda. Quando chegou a vez da terceira, o pai disse que não tinha dinheiro para mandar fazer outra bola de ouro. A rapariga pediu-lhe apenas que mandasse fazer uma de prata, e o pai assim fez.

Once there was a man who had three daughters. In the kingdom where he lived, there was a custom of hanging a gold ball at the door when a husband was sought for an unmarried girl. The eldest daughter married a prince, and so did the second. When the third's turn came, the father said he had no money to have another gold ball made. The girl only asked him to have one made of silver, and her father did so.

Um príncipe passou pela porta e, ao ver a bola de prata, disse para si próprio: "Não, isto é pobre demais, não é para mim." Mas depois passou um homem simples que olhou para a bola e murmurou: "Isto, na verdade, é para mim." Entrou, pediu a rapariga em casamento, e ela foi com ele para uma terra distante. Ao fim de nove meses, nasceu-lhes uma filha.

A prince passed the door and, seeing the silver ball, said to himself: "No, this is too poor, it is not for me." But then a simple man passed who looked at the ball and murmured: "This, in truth, is for me." He went in, asked for the girl in marriage, and she went with him to a distant land. Nine months later, a daughter was born to them.
