A Madrasta

Era uma vez um viúvo que tinha um filho e uma filha. A filha ia à escola, e a professora não parava de lhe pedir que convencesse o pai a casar com ela. A professora tinha três filhas: uma era zarolha, outra coxeava e a terceira era cega. A menina dizia todos os dias ao pai: "Pai, casa com a minha professora, que ela dá-me rebuçados de mel." O pai respondia sempre: "Agora dá-te rebuçados de mel; depois dar-te-á rebuçados de fel."

Once there was a widower who had a son and a daughter. The daughter went to school, and the teacher never stopped asking her to convince the father to marry her. The teacher had three daughters: one was cross-eyed, another limped, and the third was blind. The girl would say to her father every day: "Father, marry my teacher, for she gives me honey sweets." The father would always reply: "Now she gives you honey sweets; later she will give you bitter ones."

O pai comprou um chapéu novo e disse à filha: "Quando este chapéu estiver gasto, casarei com a tua professora." E pendurou-o num prego. A menina foi contar à professora. Esta disse-lhe para lhe trazer o chapéu. Quando o pai saiu, a menina levou o chapéu à professora, que o pôs no forno e rasgou-o em vários sítios. A menina pendurou-o de novo. Um dia o pai pô-lo na cabeça e desfez-se logo. "Agora terei de casar," disse ele. Mas comprou ainda umas botas e impôs a mesma condição. A professora destruiu-as da mesma forma, e o casamento realizou-se.

The father bought a new hat and told the daughter: "When this hat is worn out, I will marry your teacher." And he hung it on a peg. The girl went and told the teacher. She told her to bring her the hat. When the father went out, the girl took the hat to the teacher, who put it in the oven and tore it in several places. The girl hung it back up. One day the father put it on his head and it fell apart at once. "Now I shall have to marry," he said. But he still bought a pair of boots and set the same condition. The teacher destroyed them in the same way, and the marriage took place.
