Once there was a maiden who lived imprisoned in a tall tower. Despite her captivity, there was a prince who visited her every afternoon. He would arrive at the foot of the tower and call to her, and she would let her long braid fall from the window so that the prince could climb up and talk with her. They would spend hours talking until the sun set and the prince climbed back down the braid and departed.

A bruxa agarrou-a e subiu.

One day, a witch happened to pass by and saw the prince climbing up the braid. She returned the next day earlier than the prince usually came and, perfectly imitating his voice, called to the maiden. The maiden, unsuspecting, let down her braid as always. The witch grabbed hold of it and climbed up. She then spent some time giving the maiden bad advice and telling her to forget the prince.

When the prince arrived shortly after, the maiden told him everything the witch had said to her. The prince was furious and decided to take the maiden away from there at once. The young woman said farewell to everything in the tower before leaving — the table, the chairs, the walls — but she forgot to say farewell to the broom and the broomstick. She took with her a glass of water, a small bag of stones, and another of sand, and the two of them fled by carriage.

Shortly after, the witch returned to the tower and began calling for the maiden. The table and chairs replied that the maiden was very ill. But the broom and the broomstick, hurt at not having received a farewell, went to the window and called out: "What they say is not true! The maiden fled with a young man!" The witch, learning this, set off running to catch the fugitives.

A bruxa escalou-a a custo.

The maiden looked out of the carriage window and saw the witch rapidly approaching. She threw the bag of sand and immediately a great desert formed between them and the witch. The witch crossed it with difficulty but managed it. The maiden then threw the stones and an enormous wall rose up. The witch climbed it with effort. Finally, the maiden poured the water from the glass and a wide, deep river appeared that the witch could not cross.

A donzela subiu à árvore e esperou. E atirou o cântaro contra a fonte, partindo-o.

On arriving at the city gates, the prince told the maiden she should wait at the top of a tree beside a fountain while he went to gather his court for the solemn entry into the city. He promised he would return. The maiden climbed the tree and waited. After some time, a dark-skinned serving woman came for water at the fountain and saw the reflection of the maiden's face in the clear water. Thinking it was her own reflection, she exclaimed: "Oh, beautiful dark woman, what are you doing fetching water? Break the jug!" And she threw the jug against the fountain, shattering it.

The maid went for another jug and returned. She again saw the reflection and again broke the jug. On the third time she brought a tin pitcher that would not break no matter how hard she struck it. Furious, she looked up and saw the maiden in the tree. With sweet words she convinced her to come down so she could comb her hair. As soon as the maiden descended, the maid drove a long pin into her head. The maiden immediately transformed into a white dove and flew away.

The maid climbed into the tree and waited for the prince. When he arrived and saw her, he was very surprised, for this was not the young woman he had left there. The maid said the sun had darkened her while she waited. The prince had his doubts but, having given his word, took her to the palace. Every day a beautiful dove came to the garden and asked the gardener how the prince was getting along with his dark maid. The gardener went and told the prince of this.

Puxou-o.

The prince had a snare of ribbon prepared, then one of silver, then of gold, but the dove always evaded them. Only when the gardener laid a snare of brilliants did the dove fly right into it. Seeing the dove caught, the treacherous maid asked that it be killed to make broth. But the prince refused and began to caress the bird. Running his hand over her head, he felt a pin buried in the down. He pulled it out.

O príncipe, furioso, mandou matar a traidora.

At that instant, the dove transformed into the very maiden the prince had left by the fountain. She told him everything the maid had done to her. The prince, furious, had the traitor put to death. From her bones they made steps beside the maiden's bed, and from her skin they made a drum. The prince married the maiden and they lived happily ever after.
