A Rainha Vaidosa

Era uma vez uma rainha muito vaidosa que passava os dias a admirar-se ao espelho. Certo dia, voltou-se para as suas damas de honor e perguntou: «Existe algum rosto mais belo do que o meu?» Todas responderam que não. Satisfeita, fez a mesma pergunta aos seus criados, e eles também negaram. Mas um dia a rainha dirigiu-se ao seu camareiro e repetiu a mesma questão.

Once there was a very vain queen who spent her days admiring herself in the mirror. One day, she turned to her ladies-in-waiting and asked: "Is there a face more beautiful than mine?" They all said there was not. Satisfied, she asked the same of her servants, and they too denied it. But one day the queen turned to her chamberlain and repeated the same question.

O camareiro, homem de palavra honesta, inclinou-se e disse: «Que seja do conhecimento de vossa majestade que existe, sim.» A rainha, furiosa, quis saber de quem se tratava. O camareiro respondeu que era a própria filha da rainha, a jovem princesa. Ao ouvir isto, a rainha ficou consumida de inveja e de ódio.

The chamberlain, an honest man, bowed and said: "It shall be known to your majesty that there is." The queen, furious, demanded to know who it was. The chamberlain replied that it was the queen's own daughter, the young princess. On hearing this, the queen was consumed with envy and hatred.

A rainha ordenou imediatamente que preparassem uma carruagem. Mandou colocar a princesa dentro e ordenou aos servos que a levassem para longe do palácio, para um lugar ermo, e que lhe cortassem a cabeça. Depois deveriam trazer-lhe a língua como prova. Os servos partiram conforme a rainha havia mandado, mas, ao chegarem ao lugar acordado, olharam para a jovem e sentiram pena dela.

The queen immediately ordered a carriage to be prepared. She had the princess placed inside and commanded the servants to take her far from the palace to a desolate place and cut off her head. They were then to bring back her tongue as proof. The servants departed as the queen had ordered, but upon arriving at the appointed place, they looked at the young girl and took pity on her.

«Vossa alteza não sabe para que fim a trouxemos aqui», disse um dos servos, «mas não lhe faremos mal nenhum.» Encontraram uma pequena cadela nos arredores e mataram-na, cortando-lhe a língua para levar à rainha. Pediram à princesa que fugisse para longe e nunca mais voltasse à cidade, para não os trair. A jovem agradeceu-lhes, encheu os olhos de lágrimas e partiu sozinha pelos campos.

"Your highness does not know why we brought you here," said one of the servants, "but we will do you no harm." They found a small dog nearby and killed it, cutting out its tongue to take to the queen. They begged the princess to flee far away and never return to the city so as not to betray them. The young woman thanked them, her eyes filling with tears, and she set off alone across the fields.

A princesa caminhou por lugares ermos e solitários até avistar ao longe uma pequena lavoura. Ao entrar, encontrou a casa quase vazia: numa divisão havia um velho caixote de pinho, noutra um enxergão de palha, e na terceira uma lareira e uma mesa. Abriu a gaveta da mesa e encontrou alguma comida, que pôs a cozer. Enquanto começava a comer, ouviu passos a aproximar-se e escondeu-se debaixo da mesa.

The princess walked through lonely, desolate places until she spotted a small farmstead in the distance. On entering, she found the house almost empty: in one room was an old pinewood chest, in another a straw pallet, and in the third a fireplace and a table. She opened the table drawer and found some food, which she put on to cook. While she was beginning to eat, she heard footsteps approaching and hid herself under the table.

Um homem velho entrou e viu-a escondida. Chamou-a sem se zangar e disse-lhe que não tinha de ter vergonha. Jantaram juntos e, ao fim da noite, o velho perguntou-lhe o que preferia: ficar como sua esposa ou como sua filha. A princesa respondeu que gostaria de ficar como filha. O velho preparou-lhe uma cama à parte e cada um foi descansar. Viveram assim muito felizes durante algum tempo.

An old man entered and saw her hiding. He called her without anger and told her she had nothing to be ashamed of. They dined together and at the end of the evening the old man asked her what she would prefer: to stay as his wife or as his daughter. The princess replied she would like to stay as his daughter. The old man prepared her a separate bed and each went to rest. They lived happily together for some time.

Um dia, um jovem príncipe passou naqueles campos e viu a princesa ao longe. Ficou tão apaixonado que adoeceu de amor. A rainha, mãe do príncipe, mandou proclamar em todo o reino que a rapariga do campo que tinha visto o príncipe devia apresentar-se no palácio. Como a princesa nunca saía de casa, não soube da proclamação. A rainha acabou por ir ela própria ao encontro da jovem, e ao aproximar-se da choupana, viu-a transformar-se num palácio magnífico.

One day, a young prince passed through those fields and saw the princess in the distance. He fell so deeply in love that he became sick with longing. The queen, the prince's mother, had a proclamation made throughout the kingdom that the country girl who had been seen by the prince should present herself at the palace. Since the princess never left the house, she did not hear of it. The queen eventually went herself to find the girl, and as she approached the cottage, she watched it transform into a magnificent palace.

O velho que acolhera a princesa tornara-se um poderoso imperador, os porcos transformaram-se em duques e toda a pobreza converteu-se em riqueza e esplendor. A rainha ficou estupefacta e pediu mil desculpas por ter mandado buscar a jovem ao palácio. Rogou à princesa que casasse com o seu filho, pois de outro modo ele morreria de desamor. A princesa concordou e o casamento celebrou-se com grande pompa.

The old man who had sheltered the princess had become a powerful emperor, the pigs were turned into dukes, and all the poverty was converted into wealth and splendour. The queen stood astonished and begged a thousand pardons for having summoned the young woman to the palace. She entreated the princess to marry her son, for otherwise he would surely die of lovesickness. The princess agreed and the wedding was celebrated with great pomp.

Mas a rainha vaidosa, mãe da princesa, não se conformou. Disfarçou-se de velha camponesa e foi ao encontro da filha com um anel enfeitiçado. Ofereceu-lho com palavras meigas, e a princesa, sem desconfiar, calçou o anel no dedo. De imediato desmaiou como se estivesse morta. O príncipe, ao encontrá-la sem vida, chorou inconsolavelmente, mas recusou-se a enterrá-la, pois o rosto dela continuava tão belo como sempre.

But the vain queen, the princess's mother, could not accept it. She disguised herself as an old peasant woman and went to her daughter with an enchanted ring. She offered it with sweet words, and the princess, unsuspecting, placed the ring on her finger. She immediately fainted as though dead. The prince, finding her lifeless, wept inconsolably, but refused to bury her, for her face remained as beautiful as ever.

Dias depois, o príncipe descobriu o anel no dedo da princesa e tirou-o. Nesse instante ela abriu os olhos e acordou, como se tivesse dormido um longo sono. Contou-lhe tudo o que a mãe lhe fizera, e o príncipe jurou protegê-la para sempre. A rainha vaidosa foi expulsa do reino, e o príncipe e a princesa viveram juntos em paz e alegria por muitos e longos anos.

Days later, the prince discovered the ring on the princess's finger and removed it. At that instant she opened her eyes and woke, as though she had slept a long sleep. She told him everything her mother had done to her, and the prince swore to protect her forever. The vain queen was banished from the kingdom, and the prince and princess lived together in peace and joy for many long years.
