EP Word Order: SVO and Clitic Movement
European Portuguese is an SVO language but allows considerable flexibility. The position of clitic pronouns and the interaction of topicalisation with enclisis/proclisis are the key word-order challenges.

European Portuguese Grammar Guide
The basic EP sentence order is Subject + Verb + Object (SVO). However, elements can be fronted for emphasis or topic marking, which then affects clitic placement (triggering proclisis).
O Pedro comprou o carro.
Pedro bought the car.
Basic SVO.
O carro, o Pedro comprou-o.
The car — Pedro bought it.
Topicalisation: fronted element + resumptive clitic in enclisis.
Subjects can be omitted in EP (pro-drop) because verb endings unambiguously encode person and number.
Fui ao mercado e comprei pão.
I went to the market and bought bread.
Subject pronoun eu omitted — fully grammatical.
Fronting a quantifier, adverb, or negative word before the verb triggers proclisis on the clitic: "Muitas vezes me disseram isso." (Many times they told me that.) — fronted element → proclisis.
Questions in EP do not require subject-verb inversion as in English. Intonation or question words mark the question: "Foste ao mercado?" not *"Foste tu ao mercado?" (though the latter is possible for emphasis).

That book — the teacher lent it to me last week, but I still haven't read it.
