Question Words (Interrogatives)
European Portuguese question words include o que/que, qual/quais, quem, onde, quando, como, quanto/a, and porquê/por que. Several have specific EP usage notes.

In EP the interrogative is one word: "Porque não vieste?" (Brazilian Portuguese writes "Por que" here — do not copy it). "Porquê" (accent) stands alone or ends a phrase: "Não sei porquê." "Por que" (two words) only appears before a noun: "por que razão", "por que motivo". "Porque" also means "because" in answers.

Why did you arrive late?
Não sei porquê.
I don't know why.
