Question Words (Interrogatives)
European Portuguese question words include o que/que, qual/quais, quem, onde, quando, como, quanto/a, and porquê/por que. Several have specific EP usage notes.

In EP: "porquê" (one word, accent) is used at the end of a question or phrase. "Por que" (two words, no accent) appears before a verb. "Porque" (one word, no accent) means "because" in answers.

Why did you arrive late?
Não sei porquê.
I don't know why.
