Every Thursday, at nine in the morning, Dona Rosa catches the bus at the Boavista roundabout in Porto. She goes to the market to buy cabbages. She has been catching the same bus for forty years. She is eighty-two, with a red coat and a black walking stick. But she walks fast, like a young girl.

Today, at the stop, there's a young man in glasses, with a map in his hand. He looks at the buses. He doesn't know which one is his. — Excuse me, which bus do I take to the centre? — Take the same one as me, son. Look, here it comes. The two of them get on. The bus is full. A man offers Dona Rosa his seat. She doesn't want it. She stays on her feet, next to the young man.
