It's half past eight in the morning in Coimbra's Baixa. The students are still asleep and the shops are closed. Only the pharmacy, with its green cross, is open. Pedro comes in with a blue balloon in his hand. His shirt is on inside out and his eyes are red. But he is smiling. He smiles at the pharmacist, at the lady in the queue, at everything.
— Bom dia. Diga. — Dói-me a cabeça — diz o Pedro. — E doem-me os braços. — Os braços? Foi ao ginásio? — Não. Ontem à noite, carreguei uma coisa pesada. Horas e horas. — Muito pesada? — Três quilos e meio. — Isso não é pesado. — Às quatro da manhã, é. — E dói-lhe mais alguma coisa? — A cara. Dói-me a cara quando sorrio.
— Good morning. What can I do for you? — My head hurts — says Pedro. — And my arms hurt. — Your arms? Did you go to the gym? — No. Last night I carried something heavy. For hours and hours. — Very heavy? — Three and a half kilos. — That's not heavy. — At four in the morning, it is. — And does anything else hurt? — My face. My face hurts when I smile.
