Vegetariano? Aqui?

Mia tem dezasseis anos e é vegetariana. Está em Lisboa com a turma numa visita de estudo. Ao almoço, entram numa tasca. "Quero uma refeição sem carne", diz Mia ao empregado. O empregado olha para ela. "Sem carne? Temos bifanas, frango..."

Mia is sixteen and vegetarian. She's in Lisbon with her class on a school trip. For lunch, they go into a traditional tasca. "I want a meal without meat," Mia tells the waiter. The waiter looks at her. "Without meat? We have bifanas, chicken..."

"Não quero carne. Sou vegetariana." O empregado pensa. "Temos uma sopa de legumes muito boa. E temos ovos estrelados com batatas fritas." Mia sorri: "Quero a sopa e os ovos, por favor. Muito obrigada!" O empregado vai embora a abanar a cabeça.

"I don't want meat. I'm vegetarian." The waiter thinks. "We have a very good vegetable soup. And we have fried eggs with chips." Mia smiles: "I want the soup and the eggs, please. Thank you very much!" The waiter leaves shaking his head.

A professora diz: "Em Portugal, a tradição gastronómica tem muita carne e peixe. Mas está a mudar. Os jovens querem mais opções vegetarianas." Mia come a sopa. É deliciosa. "Não queria sair daqui sem comer algo bom", diz ela. "E consegui!"

"In Portugal, the gastronomic tradition has a lot of meat and fish. But it's changing. Young people want more vegetarian options." Mia eats the soup. It's delicious. "I didn't want to leave here without eating something good," she says. "And I managed!"
