O Homem no Metro

Luísa apanhava o metro azul todas as manhãs entre o Marquês de Pombal e o Cais do Sodré. Era sempre a mesma rotina. Via as mesmas caras, ouvia a mesma música nos seus auscultadores. Mas numa segunda-feira de novembro, viu algo diferente.

Luísa caught the blue metro line every morning between Marquês de Pombal and Cais do Sodré. It was always the same routine. She saw the same faces, heard the same music in her earphones. But on a Monday in November, she saw something different.

Um homem de fato cinzento estava de pé perto da porta. Tinha um livro nas mãos — um livro que Luísa reconhecia. Era "O Crime do Padre Amaro" de Eça de Queirós. Via as páginas viradas com muito cuidado, como se cada palavra fosse preciosa. "Há muito tempo que não vejo alguém a ler esse livro", pensou ela.

A man in a grey suit was standing near the door. He had a book in his hands — a book Luísa recognised. It was "O Crime do Padre Amaro" by Eça de Queirós. She could see the pages being turned very carefully, as if each word were precious. "I haven't seen anyone reading that book in a long time," she thought.

Luísa inclinou-se um pouco para ver melhor a capa. Era a edição antiga, com a capa azul escura que ela via na estante do avô quando era criança. O avô lia muito. Via-o sempre com um livro. Quando ele morreu, ela herdou toda a biblioteca, incluindo essa edição.

Luísa leaned forward a little to see the cover better. It was the old edition, with the dark blue cover she used to see on her grandfather's bookshelf when she was a child. Her grandfather read a lot. She always used to see him with a book. When he died, she inherited his entire library, including that edition.

O metro parou em Rato. Mais pessoas entraram. Luísa perdeu o homem de vista por um momento. Quando o viu outra vez, ele tinha fechado o livro e estava a olhar para ela. Ela desviou o olhar, com vergonha de ter sido apanhada a ver.

The metro stopped at Rato. More people got on. Luísa lost sight of the man for a moment. When she saw him again, he had closed the book and was looking at her. She looked away, embarrassed at having been caught looking.

"Viu a capa?", perguntou ele em voz baixa. Luísa ficou surpreendida. "Desculpe?" "Viu a capa do livro. Reconheceu-o." Era verdade. Ela não tinha nada a dizer. "O meu avô tinha essa edição", disse ela por fim. O homem sorriu. "O meu também. Vejo sempre este livro como uma herança."

"Did you see the cover?" he asked quietly. Luísa was surprised. "Sorry?" "You saw the book's cover. You recognised it." It was true. She had nothing to say. "My grandfather had that edition," she finally said. The man smiled. "Mine too. I always see this book as an inheritance."

Cais do Sodré. O metro parou e as portas abriram-se. O homem saiu primeiro. Na saída, virou-se e disse: "Se quiser ver mais livros assim, há um alfarrabista na Rua do Alecrim que os vende." Luísa viu-o desaparecer no meio da multidão. Nunca mais o viu. Mas nessa tarde foi ao alfarrabista — e viu a edição exata que o avô tinha.

Cais do Sodré. The metro stopped and the doors opened. The man got off first. At the exit, he turned and said: "If you want to see more books like this, there's a second-hand bookshop on Rua do Alecrim that sells them." Luísa watched him disappear into the crowd. She never saw him again. But that afternoon she went to the bookshop — and saw the exact edition her grandfather had.
