Ficar ou Partir?

Beatriz recebeu um e-mail na terça-feira de manhã. Uma empresa em Londres oferecia-lhe um emprego. O salário era o dobro do que ganhava em Portugal. Ficou a olhar para o ecrã durante muito tempo.

Beatriz received an email on Tuesday morning. A company in London was offering her a job. The salary was double what she earned in Portugal. She stayed staring at the screen for a long time.

"Fico ou não fico?" perguntou para si própria. Falou com a sua mãe ao telefone. "Mãe, tenho uma proposta para ir trabalhar para Londres." A mãe ficou em silêncio por um momento. "E tu? Queres ir?"

"Do I stay or not?" she asked herself. She spoke with her mother on the phone. "Mum, I have a proposal to go and work in London." Her mother went silent for a moment. "And you? Do you want to go?"

Beatriz foi ao café com o seu amigo Tomás. Tomás tinha ficado em Lisboa quando os outros amigos foram para o estrangeiro. "Ficas cá ou vais?" perguntou ele. "Não sei", disse Beatriz. "Se ficar, fico na minha zona de conforto. Se for, fico sem a minha família perto."

Beatriz went to the café with her friend Tomás. Tomás had stayed in Lisbon when the other friends went abroad. "Are you staying here or going?" he asked. "I don't know," said Beatriz. "If I stay, I stay in my comfort zone. If I go, I stay without my family nearby."

À noite, Beatriz ficou a pensar. Fez uma lista: razões para ficar em Portugal, razões para ir para Londres. A lista de Portugal era longa: família, amigos, clima, comida, língua. A lista de Londres também era longa: dinheiro, experiência, crescimento, oportunidade.

In the evening, Beatriz stayed thinking. She made a list: reasons to stay in Portugal, reasons to go to London. The Portugal list was long: family, friends, climate, food, language. The London list was also long: money, experience, growth, opportunity.

No final, Beatriz decidiu aceitar o emprego. "Vou ficar em Lisboa mais seis meses", disse à empresa, "e depois mudo-me para Londres." A empresa aceitou. Beatriz ficou contente com a decisão. Era difícil, mas era dela.

In the end, Beatriz decided to accept the job. "I will stay in Lisbon for another six months," she told the company, "and then I will move to London." The company accepted. Beatriz was happy with the decision. It was difficult, but it was hers.
