O Que Precisamos?

Miguel tem doze anos e vive num apartamento em Lisboa com os pais e a irmã mais nova, Clara. Ao sábado de manhã, a mãe pede-lhe ajuda para ir às compras ao supermercado. — Miguel, precisamos de muitas coisas hoje. Podes ajudar-me a fazer a lista? — pergunta a mãe. Miguel pega num papel e numa caneta e senta-se à mesa da cozinha. Sabe que a família precisa sempre de comida fresca ao fim de semana.

Miguel is twelve years old and lives in a flat in Lisbon with his parents and younger sister, Clara. On Saturday morning, his mother asks him to help her go shopping at the supermarket. "Miguel, we need many things today. Can you help me make the list?" asks his mother. Miguel picks up a piece of paper and a pen and sits at the kitchen table. He knows the family always needs fresh food at the weekend.

— Mãe, de que é que precisamos primeiro? — pergunta Miguel com a caneta na mão. — Precisamos de pão, leite e ovos. Também precisamos de fruta fresca — responde a mãe. Miguel escreve tudo com cuidado. — Precisamos de sumo também? O frigorífico está quase vazio — observa Miguel. A mãe confirma: — Sim, precisamos de sumo de laranja. E não te esqueças do queijo para as sandes.

"Mum, what do we need first?" asks Miguel with the pen in his hand. "We need bread, milk and eggs. We also need fresh fruit," replies his mother. Miguel writes everything carefully. "Do we need juice too? The fridge is nearly empty," observes Miguel. His mother confirms: "Yes, we need orange juice. And don't forget the cheese for the sandwiches."

A irmã Clara entra na cozinha e junta-se à conversa. — Eu preciso de lápis de cor para a escola. Acabaram-se os meus — diz ela com cara triste. — Isso não é comida, Clara. Mas vou escrever na lista — diz Miguel. A mãe explica que primeiro precisam de comprar os alimentos e depois podem ir à papelaria. Clara aceita e vai buscar o seu estojo para ver exactamente de que cores precisa.

His sister Clara enters the kitchen and joins the conversation. "I need coloured pencils for school. Mine have run out," she says with a sad face. "That's not food, Clara. But I will write it on the list," says Miguel. Their mother explains that first they need to buy food and then they can go to the stationery shop. Clara accepts and goes to fetch her pencil case to see exactly which colours she needs.

O pai de Miguel chega à cozinha com o telemóvel na mão. — Bom dia a todos! Precisamos de café urgentemente. Acabou o café esta manhã e eu não consigo funcionar sem o meu pequeno-almoço — diz ele a rir. Miguel acrescenta o café à lista. — Pai, de que mais precisas? — pergunta ele. — Preciso de açúcar também. E acho que precisamos de papel higiénico — responde o pai, a verificar os armários.

Miguel's father arrives in the kitchen with his phone in hand. "Good morning everyone! We urgently need coffee. The coffee ran out this morning and I cannot function without my breakfast," he says laughing. Miguel adds coffee to the list. "Dad, what else do you need?" he asks. "I need sugar too. And I think we need toilet paper," replies his father, checking the cupboards.

Com a lista completa, Miguel e a mãe saem de casa e apanham o autocarro para o supermercado. No autocarro, Miguel relê a lista. — Mãe, acho que precisamos de saber onde fica cada coisa no supermercado. Da última vez, precisámos de muito tempo para encontrar tudo — diz Miguel. A mãe concorda e diz que vão organizar as compras por secções para ser mais rápido.

With the list complete, Miguel and his mother leave the house and catch the bus to the supermarket. On the bus, Miguel re-reads the list. "Mum, I think we need to know where everything is in the supermarket. Last time, we needed a lot of time to find everything," says Miguel. His mother agrees and says they will organise the shopping by sections to be faster.

No supermercado, Miguel ajuda a mãe a encontrar tudo. Primeiro vão à secção de frutas e legumes. — Precisamos de maçãs, peras e bananas — diz a mãe, a escolher a fruta. — Mãe, precisamos também de tomates? — pergunta Miguel. — Sim, boa ideia. Precisamos de tomates para a sopa de amanhã — responde a mãe. Miguel coloca tudo com cuidado no carrinho de compras.

In the supermarket, Miguel helps his mother find everything. First they go to the fruit and vegetable section. "We need apples, pears and bananas," says his mother, choosing the fruit. "Mum, do we need tomatoes too?" asks Miguel. "Yes, good idea. We need tomatoes for tomorrow's soup," replies his mother. Miguel carefully places everything in the shopping trolley.

— Miguel, precisas de ir à casa de banho? — pergunta a mãe, ao ver o filho inquieto. — Não, estou bem. Mas preciso de te dizer que o leite que escolheste já está quase no prazo de validade — avisa Miguel. A mãe fica surpreendida. — Tens razão! Precisamos de escolher o leite com data mais longa — diz ela. Miguel sente-se orgulhoso por ser útil. Sabe que a família precisa de alguém atento.

"Miguel, do you need to go to the bathroom?" asks his mother, seeing her son restless. "No, I'm fine. But I need to tell you that the milk you chose is nearly at its expiry date," warns Miguel. His mother is surprised. "You're right! We need to choose milk with a longer date," she says. Miguel feels proud to be useful. He knows the family needs someone attentive.

Na fila da caixa, Miguel e a mãe esperam pela sua vez. Um senhor idoso à frente deles parece confuso. — Preciso de ajuda, por favor. Não sei usar este equipamento de pagamento — diz o senhor. Miguel olha para a mãe e ela acena com a cabeça. — Posso ajudar, senhor. O que precisa? — pergunta Miguel com educação. O senhor sorri com gratidão. Precisava apenas de aprender a usar o cartão multibanco.

At the checkout queue, Miguel and his mother wait for their turn. An elderly gentleman in front of them looks confused. "I need help, please. I don't know how to use this payment machine," says the gentleman. Miguel looks at his mother and she nods. "I can help, sir. What do you need?" asks Miguel politely. The gentleman smiles with gratitude. He just needed to learn how to use the bank card machine.
