O Regresso à Mesa Portuguesa

Margarida tem trinta e seis anos e viveu em Londres durante dez anos. Trabalhou numa empresa de design e gostou muito da experiência. Em Londres comia sushi, curry, hambúrgueres e saladas. A comida era boa, mas havia algo que lhe faltava. Em março, voltou para Lisboa com duas malas e o coração cheio de saudades. No primeiro dia em casa, a mãe fez caldo verde e bacalhau assado. Margarida sentou-se à mesa e comeu em silêncio, com os olhos húmidos. Era exatamente o que precisava.

Margarida is thirty-six years old and lived in London for ten years. She worked at a design company and enjoyed the experience very much. In London she ate sushi, curry, burgers and salads. The food was good, but there was something she missed. In March, she returned to Lisbon with two suitcases and a heart full of longing. On the first day at home, her mother made caldo verde and roast cod. Margarida sat at the table and ate in silence, with moist eyes. It was exactly what she needed.

— Mãe, nunca comi nada assim em Londres. Comia muita coisa boa, mas isto é diferente — diz Margarida enquanto come a sopa. — O que comias lá, filha? — pergunta a mãe. — Comia um pouco de tudo. Londres tem restaurantes do mundo inteiro. Mas nunca comi caldo verde igual ao teu. Em dez anos, não comi uma vez caldo verde de verdade — responde Margarida. A mãe sorri e serve-lhe mais sopa. — Pois. Algumas coisas só se comem em casa.

"Mum, I never ate anything like this in London. I ate lots of good things, but this is different," says Margarida while eating the soup. "What did you eat there, dear?" asks her mother. "I ate a bit of everything. London has restaurants from all over the world. But I never ate caldo verde like yours. In ten years, I did not eat real caldo verde even once," Margarida replies. Her mother smiles and serves her more soup. "Exactly. Some things can only be eaten at home."
