Saber ou Não Saber

Miguel tem nove anos e vive em Cascais, uma cidade bonita perto do mar. Ele gosta muito de andar de bicicleta, de jogar futebol com os amigos e de ir à praia. Mas há uma coisa que Miguel não sabe fazer: sabe nadar. Os seus colegas todos sabem nadar, e ele fica sempre em terra quando vão ao mar. A mãe diz que este verão vai mudar tudo. — Vais aprender a nadar na piscina municipal — diz ela. Miguel fica nervoso, mas também curioso.

Miguel is nine years old and lives in Cascais, a beautiful town near the sea. He loves cycling, playing football with friends and going to the beach. But there is one thing Miguel does not know how to do: he cannot swim. All his classmates know how to swim, and he always stays on land when they go to the sea. His mother says this summer will change everything. "You will learn to swim at the municipal pool," she says. Miguel feels nervous, but also curious.

Na segunda-feira de manhã, a mãe leva Miguel à piscina municipal de Cascais. O monitor chama-se Rodrigo e é um jovem simpático com cabelo louro. Rodrigo pergunta logo a Miguel: — Sabes flutuar? Miguel abana a cabeça. — Não, não sei. Nunca aprendi. — Não faz mal — diz Rodrigo com um sorriso. — Eu não sabia nadar quando tinha a tua idade. Aprendi com um monitor muito paciente. Hoje vou ensinar-te tudo o que sei.

"Do you know how to float?" Rodrigo asks Miguel straight away. Miguel shakes his head. "No, I don't. I never learnt." "Never mind," says Rodrigo with a smile. "I didn't know how to swim when I was your age. I learnt with a very patient instructor. Today I will teach you everything I know."
