Como Te Chamas?

Ana é uma rapariga de dez anos que vive em Lisboa. Ela estuda numa escola perto de casa. Hoje é o primeiro dia do novo semestre e há uma rapariga nova na turma. A professora apresenta a nova aluna à turma e diz que ela se chama Beatriz. Ana fica curiosa e decide falar com ela durante o intervalo. Na escola de Ana, há muitas raparigas com nomes bonitos, mas o nome Beatriz parece-lhe especial. A professora chama os alunos pelo nome quando quer que respondam às perguntas.

Ana is a ten-year-old girl who lives in Lisbon. She studies at a school near her home. Today is the first day of the new semester and there is a new girl in the class. The teacher introduces the new student to the class and says her name is Beatriz. Ana is curious and decides to talk to her during break time. At Ana's school, there are many girls with pretty names, but the name Beatriz seems special to her. The teacher calls students by name when she wants them to answer questions.

— Como te chamas? — pergunta Ana com um sorriso, durante o intervalo no recreio. A rapariga nova vira-se e responde com simpatia. — Chamo-me Beatriz. E tu? — Chamo-me Ana. Sou de Lisboa. És nova aqui? — pergunta Ana. — Sim, sou. A minha família chamou-me Beatriz em homenagem à minha avó. A minha avó chama-se Beatriz também e ela fica sempre muito contente quando me chama pelo nome.

"What is your name?" asks Ana with a smile, during the break in the playground. The new girl turns around and responds warmly. "My name is Beatriz. And you?" "My name is Ana. I am from Lisbon. Are you new here?" asks Ana. "Yes, I am. My family named me Beatriz in honour of my grandmother. My grandmother's name is also Beatriz and she is always very happy when she calls me by name."

As duas raparigas sentam-se num banco do recreio e continuam a conversar. Beatriz conta que veio do Porto com a família há duas semanas. O seu pai encontrou trabalho em Lisboa e a família mudou-se para a capital. Ana escuta com atenção. Ela sabe que mudar de cidade é difícil, especialmente para uma criança. Ana lembra-se de quando chamou a sua melhor amiga para a ajudar quando estava triste. Agora quer fazer o mesmo por Beatriz.

The two girls sit on a bench in the playground and continue talking. Beatriz explains that she came from Porto with her family two weeks ago. Her father found work in Lisbon and the family moved to the capital. Ana listens carefully. She knows that moving to a new city is difficult, especially for a child. Ana remembers when she called her best friend to help her when she was sad. Now she wants to do the same for Beatriz.

— Posso chamar-te Bea? — pergunta Ana. — Claro que sim! Os meus amigos do Porto chamavam-me sempre Bea — responde Beatriz com uma gargalhada. — Ótimo! E podes chamar-me Anita, se quiseres. A minha mãe chama-me sempre assim — diz Ana. As duas raparigas sorriem. Parece que já são amigas há muito tempo, embora se tenham conhecido há apenas alguns minutos.

"Can I call you Bea?" asks Ana. "Of course! My friends in Porto always called me Bea," replies Beatriz with a laugh. "Great! And you can call me Anita, if you want. My mum always calls me that," says Ana. The two girls smile. It seems as if they have been friends for a long time, even though they only met a few minutes ago.

Quando o intervalo acaba, a professora chama os alunos para a sala de aula. — Alunos, por favor entrem! — diz ela em voz alta. Ana e Beatriz entram juntas. A professora chama a atenção da turma para apresentar Beatriz de forma mais detalhada. — Esta é a Beatriz. Ela chama-se Beatriz Ferreira e vem do Porto. Espero que toda a turma a faça sentir bem-vinda — diz a professora com simpatia.

When the break ends, the teacher calls the students into the classroom. "Students, please come in!" she says loudly. Ana and Beatriz enter together. The teacher draws the class's attention to introduce Beatriz in more detail. "This is Beatriz. Her name is Beatriz Ferreira and she comes from Porto. I hope the whole class makes her feel welcome," says the teacher warmly.

À tarde, depois das aulas, Ana espera por Beatriz à porta da escola. As mães de ambas as raparigas chegam ao mesmo tempo para as ir buscar. — Boa tarde! Chamo-me Marta, sou a mãe da Ana — diz a mãe de Ana. — Muito prazer! Chamo-me Sofia, sou a mãe da Beatriz — responde a outra senhora. As duas mães também começam a conversar e parece que as famílias vão dar-se bem.

In the afternoon, after school, Ana waits for Beatriz at the school door. Both girls' mothers arrive at the same time to pick them up. "Good afternoon! My name is Marta, I am Ana's mother," says Ana's mother. "Pleased to meet you! My name is Sofia, I am Beatriz's mother," replies the other lady. The two mothers also begin to chat and it seems the families will get along well.

— Mãe, esta é a Bea! Chamamo-nos por alcunhas — explica Ana com entusiasmo. A mãe de Ana sorri. — Que giro! Eu e a minha melhor amiga também nos chamávamos por alcunhas quando éramos pequenas — diz ela com saudade. Beatriz olha para a mãe e depois para Ana. Está muito contente com a sua nova amiga. Lisboa parece-lhe menos estranha agora que tem alguém que a chama pelo nome com carinho.

"Mum, this is Bea! We call each other by nicknames," explains Ana with excitement. Ana's mother smiles. "How sweet! My best friend and I also used to call each other by nicknames when we were little," she says nostalgically. Beatriz looks at her mother and then at Ana. She is very happy with her new friend. Lisbon feels less strange to her now that she has someone who calls her by name affectionately.

No caminho para casa, Ana fala com a mãe sobre o seu novo dia de escola. — Mãe, a professora chamou-nos a todos pelo nome hoje. On the way home, Ana talks to her mother about her new school day. "Mum, the teacher called us all by name today. She said it is important to know every student's name," says Ana. "You are right, dear. Knowing people's names is a form of respect," replies her mother. Ana thinks about her mother's words. She promises herself that she will always call her classmates by the correct name.

That evening, Ana calls her grandmother to share the news. "Grandma, today I met a new girl! Her name is Beatriz, just like your friend from your youth!" says Ana happily. "What a coincidence! The name Beatriz is very pretty. Will you call me when you arrive tomorrow?" asks the grandmother. "Of course, grandma! I will call you as soon as I arrive," replies Ana. The grandmother laughs and wishes her goodnight.

No dia seguinte, Ana chega à escola cedo. Ela chama a Beatriz assim que a vê entrar no portão. — Bea! Por aqui! — grita Ana, acenando com a mão. Beatriz sorri e corre para junto da amiga. The next day, Ana arrives at school early. She calls out to Beatriz as soon as she sees her come through the gate. "Bea! Over here!" shouts Ana, waving her hand. Beatriz smiles and runs to join her friend. The two girls call a few more classmates to join the group. Soon there is a cheerful group of four girls chatting in the playground. Ana feels very happy that she took the initiative to call out to Beatriz on the first day.

Her new friend Ana calls her every day, and that makes all the difference.

Na sexta-feira à tarde, Beatriz convida Ana para ir a sua casa no fim de semana. — Ana, a minha mãe disse que podes vir cá a casa no sábado. Chamarei por ti às dez da manhã — diz Beatriz. — Ótimo! On Friday afternoon, Beatriz invites Ana to her home at the weekend. "Ana, my mother said you can come to our house on Saturday. I will call for you at ten in the morning," says Beatriz. "Great! I will call my mum right now to ask," replies Ana with enthusiasm. A few minutes later, Ana's mother gives permission. The two friends hug each other with joy. The friendship between them began with a simple question: "What is your name?"
