Anna was German and had been living in Lagos for a year. On Thursday, she woke up with almost no voice. Her throat hurt, and the thermometer read thirty-nine degrees. On the kitchen calendar, Saturday was marked with a red heart: on that day, Anna was finally going to meet her boyfriend Duarte's mother. Duarte only ever said that she worked a lot, and the dinner had already been moved twice. Every night, Anna studied Portuguese so she could talk properly with her.

Pegou no telemóvel e marcou o 808 24 24 24, o número do SNS 24. Atendeu uma enfermeira. — O seu nome, por favor? — Anna.

Anna didn't have a family doctor yet. She picked up her phone and dialled 808 24 24 24, the SNS 24 number. A nurse answered. — Your name, please? — Anna. With two n's. — Sorry, could you say that again? Anna was speaking so quietly that the nurse had to ask everything twice. Then came the questions: her patient number, the fever, the cough, the aches. At the end, the nurse said: — I'm going to book you an appointment at the health centre, today at three. Is that all right?
