Story opening — Portuguese with English Translation

Ele vê a Beatriz e suspira.

It's ten in the morning in Arroios. Beatriz walks into the supermarket with a cloth bag. Inside the bag there's a blue box of chicken and rice, still warm. It's for lunch. Beatriz doesn't buy much: half a kilo of tomatoes, half a dozen eggs and a litre of milk. Then she goes to the self-checkouts. Next to the machines stands a tall employee in a green uniform. He sees Beatriz and sighs.

— Bom dia. A senhora precisa de ajuda? — Preciso. Quanto custa um saco? — Custa uns cêntimos. Mas a senhora já tem um saco. — Pois tenho. Só quero saber. E os tomates? Quanto custam?

— Good morning. Do you need any help, madam? — Yes, I do. How much does a bag cost? — It costs a few cents. But you already have a bag. — So I do. I just want to know. And the tomatoes? How much do they cost? The employee puts the tomatoes on the scale and taps the screen. — They cost what the screen says. — So expensive! Last week they cost less.
