O Neto Chegou com uma Carta

A casa era mais pequena do que o Rodrigo se lembrava. Ou se calhar ele é que estava maior. Ficou à porta com a chave na mão e não a rodou logo. Da última vez que tinha chegado àquela porta, a avó tinha-lhe aberto. Agora ninguém abria nada. Rodou a chave. O corredor cheirava a pó e a alfazema, como as casas velhas cheiram quando estão fechadas há meses.

The house was smaller than Rodrigo remembered. Or maybe he was just bigger. He stood at the front door with the key in his hand and didn't turn it straight away. The last time he'd arrived at this door, his grandmother had opened it. Now nobody opened anything. He turned the key. The hallway smelled of dust and lavender, the way old houses do when they've been closed up for months.

Ele chegava a Évora uma vez por ano, às vezes duas. Sempre atrasado. A avó esperava à janela com a Pinta no colo. Ele chegava à porta e ela já tinha a sopa ao lume. Era o acordo deles. Ele chegava, ela esperava. Tinha funcionado assim durante quinze anos, desde que ele se tinha mudado para Londres. Os vizinhos chegavam a casa às seis e viam-na sentada à janela. "Ainda à espera do rapaz?", perguntavam. "Ele chega sempre", dizia ela. "Mesmo atrasado."

He used to arrive in Évora once a year, sometimes twice. Always late. His grandmother used to wait by the window with Pinta on her lap. He'd arrive at the door and she'd already have the soup on the stove. That was the deal. He arrived, she waited. It had worked that way for fifteen years, ever since he'd moved to London. The neighbours used to arrive at their houses at six and see her sitting by the window. "Still waiting for the boy?" they'd ask. "He always arrives," she'd say. "Even late."

O Rodrigo atravessou a cozinha. A mesa estava limpa. Alguém — uma vizinha, provavelmente — tinha arrumado tudo depois do funeral. O frigorífico estava vazio. As chávenas estavam empilhadas ao contrário. Tudo parecia arrumado de vez. Sentou-se na cadeira dela, à janela. A rua era a mesma. O relógio da igreja ainda chegava à hora certa uns segundos atrasado, como sempre tinha chegado. Até o relógio de Évora chegava tarde.

Rodrigo walked through the kitchen. The table was clean. Someone — a neighbour, probably — had tidied up after the funeral. The fridge was empty. The cups were stacked upside down. Everything looked like it had been put away for good. He sat in her chair by the window. The street was the same. The church clock still arrived at the hour a few seconds late, like it always had. Even the clock in Évora arrived late.

Quase não o viu. Em cima da mesa da cozinha, debaixo de um peso de papel de vidro, havia um envelope. O nome dele estava escrito, na letra da avó. Letras pequenas e cuidadosas. Pegou no envelope. Lá dentro, uma única folha de papel pautado, daquele que ela costumava arrancar do caderno. A data no topo era de há anos — a noite em que ele tinha chegado às nove em vez das três. A noite em que o autocarro tinha avariado em Vendas Novas.

He almost didn't see it. On the kitchen table, under a glass paperweight, there was an envelope. His name was on it, in her handwriting. Small, careful letters. He picked it up. Inside, a single sheet of lined paper, the kind she used to tear out of her notebook. The date at the top was from years ago — the night he'd arrived at nine instead of three. The night the bus had broken down in Vendas Novas.

"Rodrigo", começava a carta. "Chegaste hoje às nove e dez da noite. Esperei o dia todo. Não fiquei zangada — nunca cheguei a zangar-me contigo, só cheguei à preocupação. Quando entraste, reparei que estavas mais alto. Quando é que isso aconteceu? Comeste duas tigelas de sopa e disseste-me que o avião tinha chegado atrasado. Mas eu cheguei à verdade antes de tu ma dizeres. Quase não vieste. Vi-o nos teus olhos quando chegaste. Algo quase te tinha prendido em Londres. Chegaste na mesma, e isso importou mais do que a hora."

"Rodrigo," the letter began. "You arrived tonight at ten past nine. I waited all day. I wasn't angry — I never arrived at anger with you, only at worry. When you walked in, I noticed you were taller. When did that happen? You ate two bowls of soup and told me the plane had been late. But I arrived at the truth before you told me. You almost didn't come. I saw it in your eyes when you arrived. Something had nearly kept you in London. You arrived anyway, and that mattered more than the hour."

"Cheguei a uma conclusão naquela noite, sentada na cozinha depois de tu adormeceres. A minha vida foi boa porque tu chegavas. Sempre atrasado, sempre com desculpas, mas chegavas. Se um dia chegares a esta casa e eu já cá não estiver, fica a saber: eu esperei. E a espera nunca foi em vão. Cada vez que chegavas, mesmo às nove da noite, bastava. — Avó." O Rodrigo pousou a carta. Ficou sentado na cozinha vazia durante muito tempo. Depois levantou-se, aqueceu água para café e sentou-se na cadeira dela, à janela. Lá fora, Évora estava silenciosa. Ele tinha chegado. Atrasado, outra vez. Mas tinha chegado.

"I arrived at a conclusion that night, sitting in the kitchen after you fell asleep. My life was good because you arrived. Always late, always with excuses, but you arrived. If one day you arrive at this house and I'm no longer here, know this: I waited. And the waiting was never wasted. Every time you arrived, even at nine at night, it was enough. — Avó." Rodrigo put the letter down. He sat in the empty kitchen for a long time. Then he got up, heated water for coffee, and sat in her chair by the window. Outside, Évora was quiet. He had arrived. Late again. But he had arrived.
