O Livro Proibido

No mundo de Marco, os livros são proibidos. Há dez anos que o governo os recolheu todos e os queimou na Praça Central. As pessoas só podem ler os comunicados oficiais nas paredes das ruas. Marco tem quinze anos e nunca tinha lido um livro — até agora.

In Marco's world, books are forbidden. Ten years ago the government collected them all and burned them in the Central Square. People can only read the official notices on the walls of the streets. Marco is fifteen years old and had never read a book — until now.

O livro estava escondido debaixo de uma tábua do soalho em casa do avô. Depois de o avô morrer, Marco encontrou-o quando ajudava a limpar a casa. Era um livro de contos com a capa azul e gasta. Leu o título: "Histórias de Longe e de Perto".

The book was hidden under a floorboard in his grandfather's house. After his grandfather died, Marco found it while helping to clean the house. It was a storybook with a worn blue cover. He read the title: "Stories from Far and Near".

À noite, Marco lia o livro com uma lanterna debaixo do lençol. As histórias eram simples — um pescador, uma criança perdida, uma velha sábia — mas para Marco eram como água no deserto. Lia devagar para que durassem mais.

At night, Marco read the book with a torch under the sheets. The stories were simple — a fisherman, a lost child, a wise old woman — but for Marco they were like water in the desert. He read slowly so that they would last longer.

Uma noite, viu luz na janela do vizinho. Era o professor Sousa. O professor olhou para a janela de Marco, viu a luz da lanterna e percebeu. Os dois olharam um para o outro. O professor acenou com a cabeça e fechou as persianas. Marco percebeu: estava seguro.

One night, he saw a light in the neighbour's window. It was teacher Sousa. The teacher looked at Marco's window, saw the torchlight and understood. The two looked at each other. The teacher nodded and closed the shutters. Marco understood: he was safe.

Quando acabou o livro, Marco não sabia o que fazer. Voltou ao princípio e leu outra vez. Depois escreveu o nome do avô na última página: "Para o avô António, que guardou as palavras."

When he finished the book, Marco did not know what to do. He went back to the beginning and read it again. Then he wrote his grandfather's name on the last page: "For grandfather António, who kept the words."
