Many years ago, the two young adventurers Filipe and Clara arrive at the banks of the Douro river. They need to cross to the northern bank, but the only bridge is a very old stone bridge. In the middle of the bridge, an old woman with white hair is seated who does not let anyone cross.
Qual é a palavra?"
"To cross this bridge," says the old woman, "you must answer a riddle. The word you seek is Portuguese and has no translation in other languages. It is a longing for something that perhaps never existed. A sweet sadness. A love of the past. What is the word?"
Filipe pensa muito. Tenta palavras em latim, em castelhano, em francês. Nenhuma serve. Clara fica em silêncio um momento. Depois diz baixinho: "Saudade."
Filipe thinks hard. He tries words in Latin, in Castilian, in French. None fits. Clara is silent for a moment. Then she says softly: "Saudade."
A velha sorri. "Passem," diz ela.
The old woman smiles. "Pass," she says. "Whoever knows the name of saudade knows the heart of Portugal." The bridge is not enchanted. It is just an old stone over the river. But Filipe and Clara cross it more carefully than any before.
Do outro lado, Filipe pergunta a Clara: "Como sabias?" Clara encolhe os ombros. "Senti," diz ela. "A saudade não se aprende. Sente-se."
On the other side, Filipe asks Clara: "How did you know?" Clara shrugs. "I felt it," she says. "Saudade cannot be learned. It is felt."
