O Mapa Antigo

Beatriz Sousa passa os seus dias entre as estantes da biblioteca da Universidade de Coimbra. Como paleógrafa, o seu trabalho é catalogar documentos antigos — alguns com séculos, escritos em latim, árabe ou português arcaico. Num outono chuvoso, ao abrir uma caixa que esteve selada desde 1743, encontra um mapa desenhado em pergaminho. As indicações apontam para um vale entre as montanhas do Gerês que não figura em nenhuma carta geográfica conhecida.

Beatriz Sousa spends her days among the shelves of the University of Coimbra library. As a palaeographer, her work is to catalogue ancient documents — some centuries old, written in Latin, Arabic or archaic Portuguese. On a rainy autumn day, opening a box that had been sealed since 1743, she finds a map drawn on parchment. The directions point to a valley between the Gerês mountains that does not appear on any known geographical chart.

Beatriz consulta quatro colegas e todos chegam à mesma conclusão: o mapa é autentico, do século XV, e a caligrafia corresponde à de um monge copista que viveu em Braga. A nota no verso diz apenas: "Aqui repousa o que os homens esqueceram. Só entra quem busca o saber, não o poder."

Beatriz consults four colleagues and they all reach the same conclusion: the map is authentic, from the 15th century, and the handwriting matches that of a copyist monk who lived in Braga. The note on the back reads simply: "Here rests what men have forgotten. Only those who seek knowledge, not power, may enter."

No início do verão, Beatriz viaja para o Gerês. Segue as indicações do mapa durante dois dias a pé, por trilhos que quase ninguém usa. No segundo dia ao fim da tarde, o trilho desce para um vale que não é visível de nenhum ponto mais alto. No centro do vale há um edifício de pedra que parece uma biblioteca medieval.

At the start of summer, Beatriz travels to Gerês. She follows the map's directions on foot for two days along trails that almost nobody uses. On the second day at late afternoon, the trail descends into a valley not visible from any higher point. In the centre of the valley is a stone building that looks like a medieval library.

À entrada, uma voz sem corpo pergunta: "O que procuras?" Beatriz responde sem hesitar: "Compreender." A porta abre-se. Dentro estão milhares de manuscritos — textos que se julgavam perdidos para sempre: tratados de medicina árabe, crónicas de viagens ao Oriente, mapas de reinos desaparecidos. Beatriz passa três dias a catalogar em silêncio.

At the entrance, a disembodied voice asks: "What do you seek?" Beatriz answers without hesitation: "Understanding." The door opens. Inside are thousands of manuscripts — texts believed lost forever: Arab medical treatises, chronicles of journeys to the East, maps of vanished kingdoms. Beatriz spends three days cataloguing in silence.

Quando sai, o vale fecha-se atrás dela como se nunca tivesse existido. Beatriz regressa a Coimbra com as suas notas — mas não com nenhum manuscrito. Descobriu sem tirar. Os seus colegas acreditam nela quando ela apresenta os catálogos manuscritos. Ou fazem que acreditam. O que importa é que ela sabe o que existe e onde procurar na hora certa.

When she leaves, the valley closes behind her as if it had never existed. Beatriz returns to Coimbra with her notes — but with no manuscript. She discovered without taking. Her colleagues believe her when she presents the handwritten catalogues. Or they pretend to. What matters is that she knows what exists and where to look when the right moment comes.

O mapa, voltou para a caixa selada. Com uma nota nova, da mão de Beatriz: "Existe. E espera."

The map was returned to the sealed box. With a new note, in Beatriz's hand: "It exists. And it waits."
