A Feiticeira de Sintra

O príncipe Afonso chega às serras de Sintra com os seus cavaleiros, caça nos campos e deixa os lavradores sem colheita. Quando os aldeões se queixam, ele ri. "Os campos são do rei, logo são meus," diz. A feiticeira que vive numa quinta velha no cimo da serra ouve tudo.

Prince Afonso arrives at the hills of Sintra with his knights, hunts in the fields and leaves the farmers without a harvest. When the villagers complain, he laughs. "The fields belong to the king, so they belong to me," he says. The sorceress who lives in an old farmhouse at the top of the hill hears everything.

Na noite seguinte, a feiticeira aparece diante do príncipe. "Eras orgulhoso como um pavão," diz ela. "Vais aprender o que é ser pequeno." Com um gesto da mão, transforma-o numa rã. "Voltarás à tua forma quando tiveres ajudado alguém sem receber nada em troca."

The following night, the sorceress appears before the prince. "You were proud as a peacock," she says. "You will learn what it means to be small." With a gesture of her hand, she transforms him into a frog. "You will return to your form when you have helped someone without receiving anything in return."

O príncipe, agora rã, salta para os campos. Durante semanas, vive na lama dos ribeiros, come insectos e sobrevive com dificuldade. Um dia, encontra um velho agricultor cujos bois fugiram e não consegue ir buscar o trigo que ficou no campo antes da chuva. A rã, sem poder fazer grande coisa, assusta os corvos que estavam a comer as sementes — salta e coaxa durante horas, sem descanso.

The prince, now a frog, jumps into the fields. For weeks, he lives in the mud of the streams, eats insects and barely survives. One day, he finds an old farmer whose oxen have escaped and cannot go and collect the wheat that was left in the field before the rain. The frog, unable to do much, scares off the crows that were eating the seeds — jumping and croaking for hours without rest.

O velho agricultor não sabe que a rã é o príncipe. Agradece com uma voz cansada: "Obrigado, bichinho. Por causa de ti, vou ter trigo para o inverno." E vai embora sem mais. Na manhã seguinte, o príncipe acorda no seu quarto do palácio, de novo humano.

The old farmer does not know that the frog is the prince. He gives thanks in a tired voice: "Thank you, little creature. Because of you, I will have wheat for the winter." And he leaves without more. The following morning, the prince wakes in his palace bedroom, human again.

Afonso não fala do que aconteceu. Mas manda construir um celeiro para o velho agricultor e proíbe a caça nos campos dos aldeões de Sintra. Os cavaleiros acham estranho. O príncipe não explica. Há coisas que só se compreendem quando se vive na lama.

Afonso does not speak of what happened. But he orders a barn built for the old farmer and forbids hunting in the fields of the Sintra villagers. His knights find it strange. The prince does not explain. There are things that can only be understood when you live in the mud.
