A Luísa sorriu devagar.
It was Saturday afternoon. Joana arrived at her sister Luísa's flat with a bottle of vinho verde. They sat at the kitchen table. On the table was an old book, with a dark blue cover and gold lettering. "What book is that?" asked Joana. "Did you see it at a bookshop?" Luísa smiled slowly. "I never told you this story, Joana. But now I really have to tell you. Look at the cover. Don't you remember seeing it as a child?"
"For years, I used to see the same faces every day on the blue metro line," Luísa began. "I left Marquês de Pombal at half past eight, looked at my phone, saw the same man in a black suit, the same girl with pink earphones. I never saw anything that pulled me out of the routine. My eyes didn't even notice anything anymore. You know how it is — when you used to take that route to the hospital to see Mum, you were thinking only about her, weren't you?" Joana nodded in silence.
Inclinei-me um pouco para ver melhor, e ele viu-me a olhar. Fiquei com vergonha e desviei os olhos."
"One Monday in November, I saw something different. A man in a grey suit had an old book in his hands. I recognised the cover straight away — dark blue, gold lettering. It was The Crime of Father Amaro by Eça de Queirós, the edition grandfather used to keep on the bookshelf in his sitting room in Lisbon. I hadn't seen anyone reading that edition in years. I leaned forward a little to see better, and he saw me looking. I felt embarrassed and looked away."
"Ele falou comigo antes de sair. Disse: 'Viu a capa, não foi? Reconheceu-a.'
"He spoke to me before getting off. He said: 'You saw the cover, didn't you? You recognised it.' I replied that I did, that grandfather had that book. He looked at me for a good while, as if he knew me from somewhere. Then he said: 'Go to the second-hand bookshop on Rua do Alecrim today. Ask for Senhor Matias.' He got off at Cais do Sodré. I never saw him again, Joana. Never again."
"Fui ao alfarrabista nessa mesma tarde. O senhor Matias estava à minha espera atrás do balcão.
"I went to the bookshop that same afternoon. Senhor Matias was waiting for me behind the counter. Without asking my name, he took a book from under the counter — this book, Joana, this very one — and said: 'A gentleman came in yesterday and left it with me for you. He said the daughter of an old friend would come today to collect it. He said the young lady would know how to recognise it the moment she saw it. And he said the book is yours now.' I was speechless."
A Luísa abriu o livro. A Luísa abanou a cabeça devagar. "Ainda não vi. Queria que fosses tu a ver comigo."
Luísa opened the book. On the first page, in handwriting she didn't recognise, was written: "Luísa — your grandfather asked me, many years ago, to deliver this book to you one day. He knew you would recognise it. There are things he wanted to tell you and never did. Start on page 127. — An old friend." Joana looked at her sister. "Grandfather died ten years ago. And you only now saw the man? Luísa — what's on page 127?" Luísa shook her head slowly. "I haven't seen it yet. I wanted you to be the one to see it with me."
