Pedro sat down at the kitchen table. Ana had already served the soup. "You're late," she said, not looking up. "You're never late." Pedro picked up the spoon. "I left later today." Ana glanced at him. "You? You used to leave that office at six even when the building was on fire." "There was no fire. But there was something."

"I used to leave at the same time every day," Pedro began. "Six on the dot. The lift, the lobby, Sr. Valente with his newspaper. I'd leave, he'd wave, and that was it. Carla used to say I left before the coffee machine had time to cool down. The others would stay till eight, sometimes nine. I'd leave at six because my work was done. That was the deal I made with myself years ago."

"Hoje estava mesmo a sair. Já me tinha despedido do Sr. Valente. Alguém a chorar. Quase saí na mesma. O autocarro vinha dali a três minutos.

"Today I was about to leave as usual. I'd already said goodbye to Sr. Valente. But just before I got to the door, I heard something from the break room. Someone crying. I almost left anyway. The bus was coming in three minutes. If I left then, I'd catch it. If I didn't, I'd have to wait half an hour. I stood there like an idiot for about ten seconds."

"Mas não saí. Empurrei a porta.

"But I didn't leave. I pushed the door open. It was Marta, from the third floor. She was sat there with her face in her hands. When she saw me, she wiped her eyes and told me to go. 'Go, go, it's nothing.' I didn't go. I walked in and switched the coffee machine on. I said something stupid about how it gave me a decaf the day before, and she almost laughed."

"She talked for twenty minutes. I didn't ask what was wrong. Didn't give advice. I just made coffee and listened. Every now and then I said 'right.' That's it. At the end she looked at me and said: 'Everyone leaves at six. You always leave at six. Why didn't you leave today?' And I said something I hadn't planned: 'Because today wasn't a six o'clock day.'"

A Ana pousou a colher. A Ana sorriu. "Então saíste às sete." "Saí às sete. Ainda era cedo, no fundo." A Ana abanou a cabeça. Lá fora, a rua estava silenciosa, e a sopa estava a arrefecer.

Ana put down her spoon. "And what did she say?" "She said: 'Thank you for not leaving.' That was it. We left the building together. Sr. Valente nearly fell off his chair when he saw me still there at seven." Ana smiled. "So you left at seven." "I left at seven. Still early, really." Ana shook her head. "For you, Pedro, seven o'clock is the middle of the night." They both laughed. Outside, the street was quiet, and the soup was getting cold.
